Default 997.1 4s or 997.2 carrera

Hey guys, if you have an option to get a 997.1 4s or 997.2 carrera, which would you pick? If both have the same price more or less, and almost the same mileage and condition?

What if the 997.2 is 2s, would you choose that over 997.1 4s? Is that widebody enough to choose the .1 4s over a .2 non wb?

I would take the .2 Carrera over a .1 anything non-GT. All else being equal.

I was in the exact same situation and I went for the 4s .1 properly ppi'd and I got way more car & options for the money and the wide body . I myself did not want a basic 911 with little or no options then wishing I had sport seats , sport chrono, short shift etc ..

I also had to have the wide body, and I am glad I did as I have never looked back .... except for glancing at that exceptional rear

Keep in mind that the 997.1 4WD system is not the later more sophisticated AWD system. It's merely a viscous clutch system--like the VW Vanagon Synchro. By the time the 997.2 cars came out the 4WD system became much more intelligent. 4WD is a silly option for those of us in most situations. It adds weight, and is going to change the handling of the 911.\\

Mostly i am factoring the .1 4s over the .2 not for the awd but for the 3.8L and wider rear.

I think the S will always be worth more long term. But in terms of speed the .1S is about as fast as the base .2. So it really comes down to options and your risk tolerance. .1 was a no brained for me. Found 20k mile example that was mint. The same car but in the .2, would have been out of my price range. And as long as you aren't mortified by the people pumping the ims and bore scoring crap, the .1 are typically great bargains.

Matter of fact, there is a current thread of an 06 with a 4.0 rebuild that, depending on tour budget, is a hell of a deal. More power than either can you could buy. And all the fixes necessary to make the engine last forever.... super surprised it hasn't sold yet.

Was in this situation.

I know now everyone says get the .2 due to DFI, no IMS, makes more HP and updated interior. I would set a price limit and go from there. I would be happy with a 997.2 or a 997.1. having owned both.

Personally I couldn’t own a base. Why? I would always be wondering and wanting an S. Granted that would be while stuck in traffic, getting groceries or doing non S stuff. But still wondering.....

What’s your upper limit on your budget? Do you need all wheel drive? How comfortable are you with a car with an IMS? I’d answer those questions first and then proceed.

4S if doing real all weather driving otherwise 2S. Choose the all in budget and get the best you can find.

Absolutely.
997.2 base with some attention to the suspension and call it a day.

The speed aspect is actually somewhat moot in reality. I have 997.2 GTS and on the street I'm not driving it any faster than I'd drive a base model. On track.. you'll need some skill to max out what a base model Carrera can offer.

Even if my car was AWD and I lived someplace that got decent accumulations of snow I wouldn't drive it with snow or ice on the ground very often if ever. Not about the capability or about my confidence in driving it. More about not having someone in an SUV slide into my 911. You can be as careful as you like but there are other folks on the road too, and I'd rather have that happen to a car I care about less than the 911.
