997.2 3.8 Engine Failure
#241
Too much hyperbole is why Jake would just as soon stay private with his findings. Why jump into the fray when he's trying to run a for profit business?
Yes, it's one motor, one failure. Keep perspective.
But I'd still like to know what Jake knows as he repairs this. The 997.1 has had plenty of threads about problems. This thread is the 997.2.

Keeping things in perspective, yes as of now there is an odd case of 997.2 running into mishaps, but isn't the forum here is where these information are shared ?
I wouldn't shoot the messenger and would rather heard of these instances rather than being cluelessly oblivious of any mishaps. Knowledge is power.....only when used correctly. Now spreading rumors and fake news is a different thing.

This is fake news. As a proud 9A1 owner I am confident these are 200k mile motors (easily) properly maintained. If mine fails I’ll be man enough to post it but I ain’t worried. Not even a little bit

I am really just interested in knowing what failed on the OPs car, I am not interested in hearing more about bore Scoring and IMS issues in the 997.1, if I wanted to read about that I have my pick of a million other threads, mostly filled with comments from the same 8 people 6 of which own 997.2s

For all you new guys, the economics Pete laid out sums up the issue.
Ps - on a side topic, 2019 has kicked off with a bang for 997 maintenance issues. I don't remember any posts in 2018 about major engine issues. However in the last month we have had a blown 9A1, a cracked block on a M97, an IMS failure on a 2006 M97 (the first ever seen/confirmed on this forum), and a scored M97 that was not posted on the forum (because the owner knew it would devolve into a thread like this).

How in the heck does a thread titled "997.2 3.8 Engine Failure" turn in to a discussion about 997.1??? Oh wait... let me guess... Doug H showed up and this thread went straight to hell in 3...2...1.... oh never mind.. it's too late. ...
Best of luck Bronz, Wishing you the best and we know you are in good hands!!

The hand wringing here could jump start a volcano.

Truth is Doug, if this were to happen to you, or any other rennlist member here, I would be encouraging you and hoping for the best outcome for you as well. I just don't see the need for fear mongering, no matter what generation 911. An unexpected break down sucks and I am genuinely interested in learning about the outcome and solution for Bronz, because it could happen to any of us, and I would like to hear that it all turns out ok.

Although I don't know Bronz personally, I feel for Bronz, and I can understand his unfortunate downtime and the possible stress of the unknown along with the financial investment that this will cost, because I have been there. I want the absolute best outcome for his situation. It does not matter to me that he has a 997.2 and I have a 997.1.

If the 9A1 turned out to be a basket case, I would not purchase a 997.2 either and would just stick with the new stuff to lease and drive under warranty and/or an older Mezger car.
Once again, I did not infuse 997.1 intro this conversation. I just responded to what I viewed as misleading or incorrect information some of which you had a hand in starting.

I feel for the OP. Even if money is no issue, it is a disappointing situation. Thankfully, when I bought my first Porsche 4 months ago, I hadn't read threads about .1 engine failures. It would be hard to swallow an engine failure, yet I bought something I could afford to fix anything on. Before deciding to get a 997, I shopped months for a mid 80's 930 and bid on several on BAT and came close twice. The one that I wish I had gotten for about what I paid for my 997 had a little over 100k miles and within the last 10 years had had 2 engine out 18-20k rebuilds. I'm not sure why people don't see 997's as pretty reliable for a Porsche. It is not a Toyota, and they can break too, if less likely. I have never been as happy driving to work every day. The ONE thing I would be upset about if my engine grenades is waiting months for a proper rebuild instead of weeks. Patience is not my best virtue, and I'd have to buy another car to DD for more than a few weeks downtime.

Thanks guys for a strong discussion going on hopefully people shopping for these cars in the future can somehow benefit from this as we keep digging deeper and find out exactly what happened. So to steer back on topic a little bit, heres the oil analysis of the oil that i drained after the knock occurred (that fedex was finally able to deliver to Blackstone after losing it for few weeks)
Aluminum and silicon are up. Zinc is lower than before on less miles even though Motul has higher zinc content than previously used Castrol Edge on the 2 oil changes. So the engine was using up zinc to compensate for the internal damage that was already there.
