Default Speeding Story

I didn't want to hijack another's thread, but it got me thinking about my own speeding story:

February, 1984. In my bright red, brand new (barely broken in) Toyota Celica Supra, with the hood spoiler and rakish body. 5:30 AM northbound on the NE Extension of the PA turnpike with my best friend, going about 75mph. Skis tucked between the bucket seats with other goodies, on our way to a ski day in the Poconos. My idiot friend starts to push me to "see what it will really do." I was hesitant for about a minute, then came to the conclusion we were completely alone, turnpike empty, dry roadway, new Michelins, there was no danger...

The speedometer blocked by it's limiter somewhere above 125, everything in the headlights going by real fast- too fast, and BAM! We flew by a dark, parked PA State Trooper. In those days they had a single, very scary, tall dome flasher on their roof. Unmistakable. I'm F##ked.

Stupid best friend stars yelling to take the next exit, in about ten miles, as fast as we can, "go faster!" he screams. I decided that was not smart, and immediately slowed and pulled over, flashers on. My buddy is freaking! And, in about 2 minutes, here comes the trooper, pulls up behind us. I think I smiled and greeted him as warmly as I could, L & R in my hands where he could see them. Some small talk about how fast I was going. I told him the truth about "just once, to see how fast it would go." The Supra really looked sweet, freshly cleaned. I saw him glance back at the rear as walked back to his pursuit vehicle.

I'm trying to calculate how many points I'm going to get, how much is the fine... OMG, am I gonna lose my license??

He walked back, handed me a yellow warning tag!! Damn, I wanted to kiss the guy. I have only received on moving violation in the last 30 years, in my black SVT Cobra Mustang, so I am super lucky.

Don't you have a Speeding Story?

So my first car was a Porsche. I restored a a 924 when I was 15. Loved that car. Anyway I was always a spirited driver so I had a passport radar detector pointing forward, but knew radars during those days were directional so I bought another radar and put it in the back window and ran wires from the LEDs from the detector to a pre-made LED panel in the dash. This way I could always know if the radar was coming from in front of me or behind me.

I was driving home from my girlfriend’s house late one night and I could not be late or I was going to be grounded. I was driving fast and noticed the radar was coming from behind me so that meant I needed to go faster to get away from the cop. Anyway I went through a light that was pretty much orange. All of a sudden lights everywhere and the worst light was the gumball light. (Michigan state police in those days had a single red light on top of their cars). I had never been pulled over so the instant I got pulled over I went to the glove box to get my documents. Not such a good call. I then hear an officer yell at the top of his lungs to get my hands on the steering wheel. I do as directed and slowly look back at him to see his gun pointed to the back of my head. Yea I was a bit nervous. Any way he asked me what I was doing and I explained I was getting my license and registration. He then said he thought I was speeding and that I may have run the last light, which was probably accurate. Then he totally changed and started asking me if the car was my own or my parents bought it. I then explained that I paid for it and restored it myself. He then said “I am asking you this question not as an officer of the law, but as your friend...So what have you had this car up to?”. Needless to say I did not get a ticket not even a written warning. Last ticket I received was back in 1997.

This story is actually my first experience with the Porsche brand.

I'm 17. It's summer. I'm in my dad's '91 2dr Ford Explorer Sport 5MT on the way to the family cottage on Beaver Lake in WI. Speedo goes to 85. I've buried it a bit past that on I-94. The truck is literally topped out. "This is the vehicle's maximum velocity"

woop woop and lights in the rearview. I pull over. get the ticket. uneventful exchange. Back on my way.

Now, I'm under my dad's insurance so I have to tell him about this ticket.. he's going to find out anyway. His policy is if I get a speeding ticket it's two weeks without use of the car. Fair but I need a car to get to my summer job at the hardware store.

So, I ping a good friend whose dad has a 944 that he never drives and that we would ogle over whenever I visited. I ask him to ask his dad if I can borrow it for a couple weeks. In exchange, I'd detail the whole thing and give it a tune up (i.e. change the oil). I get a thumbs up, get a ride to his house, get the keys and head home.

Then I roll into my driveway in a red 944. My dad comes out and the WTF look on his face was priceless. I explain why I have the car and why I need it. He's one part upset that I circumvented his punishment but another part impressed with my problem solving.

I spent the next month as a 17 year old cruising around in a 944 in suburban Milwaukee that at the time was populated mostly by fox body mustangs and EX civic coupes. My ego went through the roof but I returned it in better condition that I received it and all it cost me was gas, oil and of course a speeding ticket.

And that's how I got into my first Porsche.

Default Too many to count

Bought a new 73 vette in December 1972 while at USNA. My first car. Then the speed limit changed to 55. I had many tickets in many states. If there had been computers talking to computers like now, I would have been in jail. Lots of warnings since I was in the military with short hair. To this day, I CANT DRIVE 55! Sold that vette in 1976 for a 914-6 and have owed P cars ever since.

Have had many a stop, but out of professional courtesy (retired Army) only one resulted in a citation.

The one I like the most is when I opened up my 400 hp '93 RX-7 on I280 one very early morning. I was doing 120 when the CHP lit me up. I dutifully pulled over. After the usual formalities, he asked me what the decal was in my rear window. I told him my Master jump wings, that I was retired Army.

He admonished me to take it easy, then told me he had just bought a 2d gen RX-7 the week before. We're then spent half an hour taking rotaries.

Reeled in by a very cool unmarked state trooper on a splendid, divided 4 lane hwy just over a mile from my home
I had run to the bank to get cash for a tile guy working in my home

I regularlily launch on this road, slightly isolated, largely unpatrolled piece of track
On the return, middle of the day, I really kick up a notch as there is absolutely no traffic
and just as I shift into 4th I see the lights about 400 yds behind
Hit the hazards, lift and coast to the nearest side street and stop about 50 yds in

A bit nervous as I’m at least double the posted 45 mph limit, maybe 96 or 98,….figure it’s going on a flatbed
very cool statie, knew a bit about Porsche (was in 911)
from his posture when he approached my vehicle I could tell he wasn’t going to write me
He wasn't even upset, never raised his voice, he just said 'try and keep it cool’..never mentioned any measured speed
Looked the car over from front to back and
(I won’t soon forget this) he said ‘honestly, the way the car flattened out in the first right hander, I didn’t think I’d catch you’
a bit more conversation, he complented me on the car
I apologized twice and he actually thanked me for stopping

very, very cool officer

Quite a few years back I was driving a 560SL Mercedes on a 50mph posted road at around 90mph when I met a Police Car coming the other way who had me clocked in his Radar.
As he went by his Flashing Lights came on and he was doing a u turn to come after me.
I pulled off to the side of the road waiting for the worst as he came screeching to a stop behind me.
He got out of his vehicle looking very agitated and yelled at me "It's your Lucky Day" and then yelled "I Am Out of Tickets" so I can't write you up.
He proceeded to give my a lecture on the dangers of driving so fast, then stormed back to his Cruiser and took off.
Yes it was my Lucky Day.

Knock on wood I've only had one with the 997. I was out for my typical country loop last year when I had a run in with the local sheriff lady.

I was coming through a small town where the speed limit drops down to 35. Right where the road opens back up into some of my favorite straights I found myself stuck behind an old Honda motorcycle with a chubby girl and her butt crack hanging off the back. There was no way I was going to look at that for the next few miles. As soon as got to the passing lane I downshifted and punched it. So there I am: wrong side of the road, blinker on, 6k RPM and climbing, Fisters trumpeting, chubby girl glaring, when I look up and to see a sheriff off in the trees. I was so blinded by the butt crack I didn't have proper situational awareness....life lesson.

By the time I slammed on the brakes and pulled back in my lane I was still doing 90 in a 55. No way I was getting out of this one so I just laughed and waited for the inevitable.

The sheriff pulled out, passed the motorcycle couple as they cheered on and pulled in behind me. Strangely she followed me for another mile or two with no lights on. Finally as a came to a stop sign she lit me up, right as the chubby girl pulled alongside laughing.

She came up to the window and asked why I was going so fast but something was strange about her demeanor. She was acting like the a school teacher talking to a kindergartener. So I played the part and I told her I felt unsafe with the girl hanging off the back of the motorcycle so I passed, stressing I had my blinker on (like that made any difference). She smiled politely and took my license back to her car. I told her to be gentle with me. She laughed.

A few minutes later she returned with nothing in hand. Something seemed fishy. She admitted she actually didn't have her radar on when I passed but knew I was going very, very fast. She said she could have given me a ticket for excessive speed but just wanted me to get home safe "in my fancy car".

I asked if I could hug her. She said no.

In graduate school in Ohio, I had a '62 VW Bug. I was also crewing for Alan Treuhaft who was running a Bug is the TransAm (obviously 2-liter division). I can't remember his driver's name, but they actually finished 4th in the under 2-liter division in one TransAm race (1971 or so—Elkhart Lake?). Anyway, my engine needed work, so Alan rebuilt it for me with it putting out ~90 HP. Needless to say, very fast.
My roommate, his girl friend and I decided to do a road trip to Chicago, taking the Indiana turnpike. On a very flat portion, I'm doing about 85 and a BMW goes past me. I decide to see what a weighted down VW with 90 HP can do. I floored it and got up to 105 and slowly overtook the BMW. As I went past, my roommate said he saw the BMW driver look over at me, look down at his speedometer, look back at me and then tap his speedometer (to make sure it was working?). After overtaking him, I pulled into the #2 lane (ahead of him). At that point, he stood on it and passed me. whereupon I dropped back down to 80 or so and watched the BMW slowly disappear into the distance.
About 10 minutes later, I passed the BMW who was on the side of the road trying to explain why he was going so fast to an Indiana State Trooper.

Was coming back home in the '09 C4S from Lubbock Texas after visiting my wife's sister. Between "civilization" and Lubbock are lots of miles not patrolled regularly by any LEOs so I was used to going "slightly" faster than the speed limit. Jumped on IH10 towards San Antonio. I asked my wife what the speed limit was as I stomped the gas pedal. At that instant, coming over a small hill in the road, I see a Texas DPS trooper closing the door on his car and he spots me and instantly turns on his lights. I pull over, ready for my first ticket in the 911. He walks up and says "I blew it. I didn't realize you weren't speeding when I hit my lights. It just looked like you were speeding." Got a verbal warning and the next day bought a Uniden R3 and have been going "slightly" faster than the speed limit allows ever since. No tickets …………. yet!

Many years back, very early one morning, I was driving a Toyota MR2 flat out (which was about 120mph) on the way westbound from NJ to Muncy PA, on Interstate 80. It was early enough that there were few cars on the road. Having a great old time. I had one of the original Escort radar detectors and was on high alert scanning ahead visually for radar traps.

Up ahead there was a minivan in the right lane that I was catching rapidly. I caught it at the apex of a relatively gentle leftwards bend in the road. And right as I was dead even and blowing past the minivan, I spotted a PA State Trooper on the far opposite side of the eastbound lanes. He had been hidden by some of that blown out rock you see at several places along I80 or other roads around mountains.

I slammed on the brakes, totally locked up all 4 tires just before he hit the radar switch on. So there I am sliding down the fast lane, radar shrieking at me. I was still braking as the minivan chugged placidly by on my right. So I figured I'm going to jail. I pulled over and was waiting on the side of the road as the Trooper pulled out of his spot.

He pulled around and walked up and it was like being in a Smokey and the Bandit movie. He said something very much like: "boy, I don't know how fast you were going before you laid down all that rubber". And then he paused and looked back prompting me to look back as well and see two solid thick black stripes on the road with a cloud of blue smoke hovering in the area. Then he continued: "but I clocked you going 78".

So inside, I'm thinking "Yes! I'm not going to jail after all, just a ticket." He took my L and R and went back to his car for what seemed like forever.

When he finally came back, he said "I'm just gonna give you a warning this time. But listen up, you keep driving like this" - at which point, I internally finished the sentence as "and you're going to kill yourself or others" - but he finished with "and you're going to go through an awful lot of tires" and grinned at me.

Was my lucky day. I figure the site of me bug-eyed as I spotted him and sliding down the highway as a minivan puttered past me must have given him a good chuckle.

I enjoyed reading everyone's speeding stories in their 911. I didn't have a story ….until this past Saturday! My wife and I were driving down to Richmond, VA on route 301. There were two lanes and there were 2 cars in front of us and about 4 cars behind us … all being held up. One in the left lane and one in the right lane in front of us and for miles they were not letting me by. Speed limit is 55 and they were going 55...all I wanted to do was go 60ish. It was almost like they were intentionally not letting me pass...why would they do that??? Because I was in a 911? Finally after a number of miles they let me by....well at this point I was frustrated so, I popped it into 3rd and buzzed them! I got up to about 100 mph before I slowed down. THEN I saw a Virginia state trooper in my rear view mirror. Lights NOT on. I thought hell where did he/she come from??? I immediately pulled over. Trooper lights still not on but the trooper pulled up behind me and turned the lights on. Trooper walked up. I already had my license and registration out. The Trooper was a she. She then asked me. "This is not Cannonball Run sir! Now be honest with me. How fast were you going? I said well before I pulled off, I was going 55 and those two cars in front of me frustrated me and......she then interrupted me and said, "well when you pulled away I had you at 98 mph and you were still pulling away from me! I don't want to spend the day in the magistrate so I am going to give you a warning. I know this car is fast but slow down. I am sure you can handle the car but what if a deer ran across the road. Please just slow it down." She never even asked to see my license and registration. I was polite and I drove off. Whew!!! I was very very lucky. I could have been put in jail.

There was not trooper behind me for miles. She must have just came up behind the pack of cars being held up by those two idiots. I would have liked to have seen the trooper's face when I pulled away and going 100 mph. She must have thought...."Are you kidding me?!?!?!"

Bad part is I bet the two idiots holding us up got a laugh when they saw me pulled over by the trooper. Oh well.

Happy Holidays!
