There are a few well documented areas of failure - IMS bearing on the early 05s and older, D-chunk cylinder failure from a slipped sleeve, bore scoring, etc. All of this is searchable. The most respected resource is Jake Raby from Flat 6 Innovations as you start your research.

Interesting thread... I currently drive a F80 M3 6MT but searching for a 997 for my fun car. M3 is great for my daily drive and the 4 doors and real back seats are kid friendly and wife approved. But I miss the linear power of a naturally aspirated engine and Porsche manual gearbox.

As a 997.1 C2S owner, a solid PPI would put a lot of worries to rest.
For a 50K budget, cross shop both a 997.1 and 997.2. It seems the 997.2 market has cooled a bit since the summer. I wanted a .2 but when I saw this 997.1 C2S that was a very clean, low mileage, CA only car at a nice price, it was a done deal.

Sandwedge so why wouldnt someone just buy a warranty...still saving 5 grand? .2 still has similar rIsk of thousands in repairs....just read some dude had to replace his pdk and cost 14 grand.
Also read other day from a mechanic in the Bay Area had been there 15 years and never seen or heard of bore scoring incident at the shop.
Whatevs...now I get how the 996 community feels. Side note, would own one of those if I could stand the look. The 996 math equation makes my 997 decision look foolish.

And you're right about the .2 cars with PDK being a similar issue. The dude that paid $14K for a failed PDK was me. Covered by after market warranty but you could say that the PDK on the .2 cars is what the IMS was to the .1 cars. Looks like to cost of PDK replacements have come down some to about half the cost of a new 997.1 engine but still a big ticket repair if out of warranty.
In summary, based on what's written on this forum and on 6-speed, a 997.2 with a 6sp manual may be next to bullet proof and one I would comfortably own without warranty. Only reason I bought extended warranty for my GTS is the PDK. The mechanical portion of the PDK seems very sturdy. It's the electronics portion of it that's causing problems according to the failure of mine and confirmed by the dealership.
