Just had to replace the water pump on my '06 with 38K miles. Started with a small leak and the smell of antifreeze smoking off the exhaust. Drove about 20 additional miles after first noticing the leak, then it started leaking bad, making a rattling noise and got very hot very fast. Parked it and waited for a flat bed. The serpentine belt should be replaced at 60K miles. My advice, try to make to 60K miles and replace the water pump when replacing the belt. Or, replace the belt when replacing the water pump if it doesn't make it to 60K miles.

Been reading some of these water pump failure horror stories, so I'm torn between a rock and a hard place.

Since my car is 2009 C2, it's going on 10 years but only has 22K miles. So my question is: Should the driving factor for replacement be age or mileage??

Pete (Petza914), please chime in since I always have great respect for your insight and advice.

Actually, both are factors. On a car that gets regular use, its probably more mileage, but keep in mind that on any car the water pump seal is still exposed to coolant all the time, whether spinning or just sitting there, which can have an effect. My wife's failed at 8 years and 60k miles. I changed mine preemptively at 8 years and 45,000 miles.

As usual, good points. So I guess that it all comes down to how many bullets do I want to play Russian Roulette with.

THANKS!!

All my experience us with .1 cars though, so don't know if the pump is different in a .2 like yours. If you want to prolong the interval, you could also buy 1 to have on hand, and if going out of town on a trip, put it in the car just in case, which by the act alone will probably guarantee it won't fail

Being caught "out of town or in the middle of nowhere", not really a problem here since the whole island is only 100 miles long by 35 miles wide.

Old thread, buttttt.....

Then WTH are you doing on a postage stamp with a Porsche? The reality makes absolutely no sense to me. JMO (no opinion on the current island condition...)
