Well, they are paid sponsors. Put the "username" on your ignore list.

One of the challenges of getting the crackles and pops like the 991 is that aftermarket exhaust systems need to be catless, or often very loud to achieve this. I had some pops and gurgles with the Fister mufflers in my normally aspirated 996, but nothing like the pops in the 991.

For some perspective, the overrun pops and crackles that you hear in race cars occur because these cars have the timing advanced compared to a street car. This advanced timing allows a race car to run better at high RPMs. The side effect of this timing is that a small amount of unburned fuel is ejected into the hot exhaust system, especially with sudden throttle lift-off, resulting in pops and crackles. Many manufacturers of sports cars have begun to program their ECU to simulate these race car sounds by ejecting a small amount of fuel into the exhaust system, similar to a race car with advanced timing. It's not practical to advance the timing in a street car, because the car won't run as well or as efficiently as it should for street use. The ECU trick is the next best thing. You'll hear it in modern Porsches, Ferraris, Corvettes, Jaguars, etc. The beauty of this approach is that you can essentially turn it off but pushing the button to put the car in "normal mode" as opposed to "sport mode".

In my opinion, a good quality aftermarket exhaust will give you much of what you seek, but you'll never get the same level of pops and crackles as a car with the ECU programmed to produce these sounds.

This is a suggestion I can get behind!

Default Yes, there is.

I replaced my center muffler with Billy Boat crossovers, my side mufflers with Fabspeed sides, and the airbox with Fabspeed Cold Air Induction. All the gurgle and pop you want. And, above 4k RPMs, it sounds wicked! Not cheap. It's a commitment. Gawd, I love this car!

Agreed. Sounds fake because it is fake.

OP: Gundo hack/Fisters/PSE + center bypass will accomplish what you're looking for.

nwGTS is spot on .... I can get all the “pop & crackle” that I want on my 2010 4S Cab by just leaving a SLIGHT bit of pressure on the accelerator when downshifting and slowing under engine braking. Not enough to actually accelerate but enough to throw some fuel to get it to sizzle in the pipes. Next to accelerating hard between 4,500k-6,500k, this is one of my favorite sounds from my exhaust set up (Fabspeed Sport Headers w/200 cel cats + PSE)

I have the FabSpeed dual intake and exhaust system with cats. It definitely sounds mean. But, it's quite load at high rpms.... it may attract a lot of unwanted attention.

Same here. Get all the crackles and pops I care to listen to in sport plus manual mode with the PSE/Sharkwerks x-pipes combo on my car..

Havent heard a 991, but I get lots of crackle and pop on my 997.1 car.
AWE headers
AWE highflow cat sections
PSE mufflers and tips
Softronic tune
Fabspeed intake
RSS underdrive pulley
AASCO lightweight flywheel

Dont have a recent video, just this old one before the underdrive pulley and LWFW were installed. Seems to do it even more now with those parts on the car

My wife's 997.1 c2s has the stock exhaust except for gundo hacked mufflers and it crackles and pops all the time when decelerating in gear.

My .1 S car has the full Fabspeed valves exhaust (intake, headers, valves mufflers, and 200 cell x cats) and it crackles and poos too, but the pitch is higher than hers, so hers are more noticeable but I prefer the sound if mine at the higher RPMs. I need to do a better video with full out acceleration as I pass the camera and with some stationary revs.

None of the exhaust videos posted for the 997 have any real pops to them. The exhaust sounds may burble and crackle, but they don't have any true pops.

I think what the OP is looking for is a way for the 997.1 to Poo like the car in the video below when releasing the throttle. I doubt it can be achieved through hardware alone since I've ran a full catless header back system and just couldn't get it to pop. As others have stated, it needs programming but I haven't found any available tunes that do it. I tried applying light throttle when decelerating but it requires very precise control and the pops that occur are very faint.

If someone's 997.1 actually pops, I'd love to hear a sound clip since I haven't found any vids of this on YouTube yet.

Thank you for the kudos! Glad you're enjoying them!

That being said, don't ever expect it to sound like a 991 it is programmed into the ECU on those cars, and it cannot yet be programmed into the 997s as I've had someone try haha. What generation do you have a 997.1 or 997.2? Then exhaust systems are quite different on the two cars. If a 997.1, here are two clips that are my favorite exhaust notes to date (one higher pitch and one deeper)

One of my all time favorites - doesn't get much better

I'll have to get a video of my wife's car as she's pulling up to the stop sign leaving the neighborhood since it does actually pop like there's unburnt fuel being lit. I have to say though, if my car sounded like that VW, I'd be looking for a new exhaust or to make it quieter as that's not a sexy exhaust note, mostly due to the tone.
