Biggest bang for the buck?

Biggest bang for the buck?
I know I am kind of preaching to the choir on this subject but while watching the Mecum auction today and seeing what people are spending on old muscle cars ( this is the only purple yurple hemi with a shaker hood and owned by Frank ) going for $200k and more, I realized that some variant of the 911 and most likely one of the 997s or a mezger turbo is probably the biggest bang for the buck in autodom.
There might be cars that out Porsche a Porsche but even if they do - they're not a Porsche.
So who coulda been a contender?

Depends on what you mean as far as "bang for the buck"
As far as performance value.. the 911 is not even in the top 5 most likely.
I'm gonna go with the Corvette as an easy winner. As much as I love the Germans and their cars, the yanks have them beat for value. I have no desire for a Corvette, but objectively I can't think of any car more efficient in dollars to performance ratio. It only gets more clear when considering upgrades and modification. My feelings about Corvettes aside, just talking literal performance to dollars spent.

There are a lot of interesting cars in the $35-100K price range - DB9, most Lotus, a handful of Ferraris, Maseratis, tons of Mercs but bang for the buck comes down to performance, quality, every day drivability and dependability.
For about the same price as the car I bought, I could have also bought a 2011 SL 63 AMG but even with 518 hp the Merc doesn't perform as well as the C4s.
SL 65 AMGs also fall in this range but those headaches are beyond the capabilities of my neurologist.

Maybe on acquisition cost, but my brother owned this generation of M5. Think he bought it for around $12k and over the 5 years or so he owned it spent about $15k in upkeep and maintenance - that ain't Bang for the Buck in my book.

You've got a point. I put a lot of money into this one, but most of it was to bring it up to snuff after years of neglect by POs. It never put me on the side of the road though, so I was impressed by the reliability.

BMWs are the worst German car. People buy them because they think they are hip, but they are pretty junk and really don't drive that well. My 2017 M3 Competition Package just sits in the garage. I had an M5 once and will never own another BMW out of warranty after that. That POS cost more than my Ferraris to keep running and candidly, BMW don't really even drive that well.
My buddy that owns a shop and specializes in German cars says he can have 10 Mercedes and Porsches and one BMW at his shop and every time it will be the BMW that won't start. Audis aren't much better, but they are definitely better than BMWs when it comes to long term reliability.

I don't think his ever stranded him either. He had a joke that every time the check engine light came on it was $3,000 but he also didn't work on it himself so was paying dealer repair rates.

That said, If one DOES know INPA really well, BMW's are a second hand bargain because of their massive depreciation. Armed with all the software, they are also quite easy to fix.

Cars are rarely investments, especially if one drives them. Drive your car, enjoy it, and invest somewhere else.
