Default Oil Consumption

Hi,

I have a 997.1 with 20K miles, used about 1 qt of oil on a 1000 Mile road trip, is this normal?, seems a little high to me.

Normal.

And you may have finally burnt off some moisture (common on a daily driver, with short trips) and then WHAM the oil level drops.

I bought mine with 14,372 miles. I just tripped 15K and did a recent oil change from Mobil 1 to Motul 5w-40. Before my oil change, I did a oil check before starting and saw that I lost a segment. I went to check the oil the next day and it went back up to the top segment.

1.6 quarts per 622 miles is actually normal for 997 - just like early 911's sucking 2 qts per 1000 miles

Zero oil burn on my 06 997.1 between 5k miles oil changes. I think some just burn more than others.

I use Motul 5w40 and find it runs a bit hotter, around 205-210 normal highway cruising, up to 225 when I get on it. I believe 210 is where the moisture burns off so if you are doing short hops you wont get to that temp.

Its normal that your oil gauge fluctuates 1 bar based on engine temp. For consistency check every few days under the same conditions.

...Not exactly. The manual says one quart every 389 miles is within specification. Maybe this is a typo--accidentally copied over from a SAAB 96 manual

My 997.1 varies by one bar depending on how level the parking space is. I check mine every morning before cold starting in the same spot in the garage. I don't know how accurate the sensor/gauge is, but it is very sensitive to small amounts of oil lost or added in my experience. I missed not having a dip stick at first. I no longer think about it.

Temperature ... the thermal coefficient of oil is larger than you may think, especially since there is a lot of oil to expand. Expansion by a pint is not unreasonable. That's a big difference on the gauge.

There are posts here as well as other car forums where users have experienced excessive oil consumption with Mobil 1.

They do. My -06 C4S used almost no oil at all or so little I only had to add minuscule amounts between oil changes. Then the -09 C4S easily went through a quart per 1,000 miles if not slightly more. And now the GTS which zips on oil. So little that I'm not keeping track but my best guess would be less than a a quart every 5,000 miles.

One of my. 1s goes through 1/2-1 quart every 4,000 miles and the other the same volume every 5,000 miles. I wonder if these higher consuming cars stay consistent at that level for tens of thousands of miles or gradually increase consumption. I know the manual says what's normal, but their "normal" numbers would concern me.

My car has about 30K miles. I have had it since new. I use Mobil1 0W-40 oil. I broke it in "by-the-book", always let the oil temp get up to 200F before going over 3k rpm or adding high loads to the engine, change the oil once every year ( 3500 miles/ yr) and drive for at least an hour per drive ( no short trips). I have never tracked my car. My engine consumes little to no oil. I might lose one bar between oil changes so oil consumption is about 1 qt per 7000 miles, maximum. I also understand that others may treat their cars the same way and still experience significantly higher oil consumption.

My guess is that the reason for very high oil consumption is breaking it in by not following the guidelines in the manual e.g. "driving it like you stole it" ( I can't believe the number of times I have seen this recommendation), tracking the car, not gradually warming up the engine before "pushing it", inadequate oil service intervals or simply, bad luck. I seriously doubt that Mobil 1 is the problem with oil consumption.

One last note...... these are different cars but the owners manuals I have for my 2016 Audi A6 2.0T and 2016 VW Golf S both state clearly that how you break in your car and how you drive it when it is warming up will have a significant impact on how the car runs as it gets older. By the way both of these cars use little to no oil ( 30K and 12K miles respectively).
