Default Stuck pixels in dash cluster LCD display?

My 997.1 GT3 developed a pattern of stuck pixels in the dash cluster LCD (pic above). They glow a bit more yellow than the other pixels which look more white. And turn red when the entire display turns red...definitely lit pixels and not dust. This happened when new seats (oem GT2 buckets fresh out of the crate from Suncoast) were installed.

Anyone know of a fix that doesn't entail swapping out the $3k dash cluster? Also trying to figure out if this might be related to some electronic interaction from swapping the seats out.

Open to using a refurb service. Tried Palo Alto speedo (don't work on this era 911) and North Hollywood speedo (can't source the displays).

I don't know of a fix, but I do have a really nice 997.1 black faced gauge cluster available for sale. It won't say GT3 in it though. I bought it to keep my car on the road when I was going to send my cluster to RUF for their upgrade, but decided not to so I've never plugged it into my car but will guarantee it works (returnable if it doesn't) .

Here's a pic and the ad link.

I don't think it's related to your seat swap. I fired up my 997.1 GT3 yesterday after maybe a couple of months sitting idle, and found the same thing, I now have some yellowish stuck pixels.

I don't know of a cost effective fix yet, so I'm interested if you find any solutions!

My spare pictured below is still available for anyone that needs a replacement.

Interesting that 2 threads spawned up with the same issue. Porsche's kryptonite looks to be winter storage and cold temps.

I had the same issue with my 987. Winter stored. Turned out to be moisture. Mine corrected after a week or two of hot weather.

Having spoken with a range of techs on this it seems like:

1) this is rare but becoming more common with the 997s. Dealers just recommend replacing the cluster
2) (new) replacement LCDs are available for the left / right display but not the center one
3) options are a) buy a replacement cluster from the dealer or on-line supplier like Perimeter for $3-3.5k + $300 to reprogram (this is for a GT3 .1 cluster); b) buy a replacement off ebay for 1.3-2k + $300 to reprogram (most sources are overseas...not sure why the ones represented as new OEM are available at such a discount) or c) have a speedo specialist swap in the display from a used cluster for ~$950 (no reprogramming needed).

I am moving down the path of route c and will report back. Tough call between this and the second option if ultimately it is just a matter of time before the other displays fail.

I still have my spare mentioned below. Maybe if you supply the parts to them, they'll charge you a good bit less and you'd come out a couple hundred ahead. Let me know if interested. I've never powered it up myself, but will stand behind the functionality if there's a problem with it.

Could try gently massaging the LCD itself near the points that are stuck. It sometimes works on computer and other LCD screens.

I have the same thing but on my climate control display. Car came this way. Massaging doesn't seem to do anything. Luckily, swapping out this unit is cheaper than the instrument display, but still frustrating.

Did anyone figure out a fix?

Someone mentioned that in the 986/996 you could swap out just the LCD for the climate control - which would be awesome and fix my problem.

Does anyone know how to do this or if it's possible?

The display panel definitely comes out as those of us who have replaced our messed up HVAC controller toggles had to disassemble the unit, including the multiple layers of the display screen. Look for a You Tube video on HVAC toggle replacement or in some of the threads about replacement climate control toggles and you'll see what I mean.

Now whether you can source that lcd membrane separately is a different matter. Maybe check the Porsche PET parts catalog to see, but my guess it they tread the HVAC head unit as a single component.

They can be repaired. See post three, no affiliation.
