Hey guys, does the 2005 997 Carerra S have the larger IMS bearing? I think I've heard someone said the S version of the 2005 has the larger bearing but wasn't sure.

The changeover was made mid-year in 2005, but that's still not a guarantee as to which bearing is in a particular 2005 car. The only way to know for 100% sure is to pull the transmission and look at the bearing flanges and nuts. Larger nut in photo on the left = larger bearing.

Looking at the engine serial #s, the general rule is that

For 3.8L motors, up to M97/01 68509790 has the smaller IMS bearing and Engine number from M97/01 68509791 has the larger revised IMS.

For 3.6L motors, if the engine s/n is M96/05 69507476 and up it has the larger bearing.

This was info from the Porsche lawsuit, but there have been engines outside of this range with the incorrect bearing.

Fantastic information! Base on this the S model with the 3.8L engine can still have the smaller IMS bearing. Can you tell me where the SN of the engine is located? I'm also looking at this one 2005 C2S that looks Great! Has low mileage and the price is below market value.

It's viewable from underneath on the driver's side right above the oil sump plate. Looks like this.

Correct. That's my wife's pink C2S which was built within about 50 engines of my silver one.

I bought mine from Texas last April and drove it to NY sight unseen from a big dealer down there. Black, 70k miles, around $30k

paint isn't perfect and black wasn't my first choice, but price was right and all around seemed like a good deal.

I've been watching what these go for when they show up and noticed that c4's don't show up often at all and a lot of times they are either $10k more then what I paid with lower miles or they have around 100k miles and cost the same.

plus I don't have to deal with traditional "salt weather" issues that cars up here seem to have.

so I think, don't look for the "perfect" car that has all the options that you want - look for a good well maintained car and enjoy it

I agree, even though I have my own preference, I'm not too picky when it comes to options. What's most important to me is the condition of exterior/interior and engine. What year is your car and is it an S?

Getting back to the silver 2005 C2S I posted above, I manage to get a photo of the engine's serial number. Kinda hard to make out but can you experts tell me if this car has the larger IMS bearings?

After a little adjustment in Photoshop...

Looks like M97/0168508050,

According to https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...l#post14511481 this engine is likely to have the smaller IMS bearing. The good news is that it would be easier to replace/upgrade.

Hey gentlemen, if I end up getting this 08' C4 which I have my fingers crossed, will I be able to disable the front wheel drive portion on the AWD? If so, how hard is it to do? Will it anyway decrease performance or affects the electronics or any way at all?

I live in TX where it never snows here so I don't think I need the AWD. I do love the wide hips it possess though. What are your thoughts on comparison between the AWD & RWD in regards to performance and steering feel?
