I paid about 900-1000 bucks for a PPI with a bore scope, and fresh plugs since we were in there about a year ago. I believe the breakdown was: PPI for $450.00, the leak-down and compression with Bore scoring was $525.

From what I was explained years ago, the tolerances are so tight on 996 & 997 engines, a leak down and compression test not needed on these 997's. If there was any issue with compression on 997 engine they wouldn't idle or run properly.
Different scenario with the older 911 engines which should be compression tested to help understand health of engine.

Sounds totally irrational for a Porsche shop to make that claim.

Found a nice looking 997.1 CS4 to have some fun with. The dealer is in Virginia, and I just heard about the dreaded bore scoring. Anyone know a tech in the VA area that can inspect on site?

It’s at best 2 hours of work with no material via the spark plugs.

after doing it and seeing it, the spark plug method is fine.

I would have not problem believing a slight bit of scoring exists on every car, only visible via the sump because it’s at the base of the cylinder which is where it starts….again on every engine

it continues due to over revs, bad behavior when cold, old oil etc etc

I think this is just a bad design. Like almost every other flat 6 except the 3.2
this one is a combination of stroke angle being very steep, and being cheap regarding the cylinder costing.

the fix is to use the proven nickelsill coating.

but, these prices I’m seeing above are ridiculous.

Scoring is more prone on the 3.8L "S" engine. Make sure you get a PPI & Bore Scope Inspection through Spark Plug holes with photos. Cost of Bore Scope Inspection is about $250-$300

I called Mark, and it turns out if you don’t go to the doctor for regular checkups you’ll never get diagnosed with cancer or any other illness for that matter.
I mean if you think about it, Magic Johnson only stopped playing basketball in the NBA because he visited a doctor….

Here in SC I had a local Indy do a full PPI (Post Purchase Inspection) which included borescoping all cylinders for about $300.

just buy a $30 endoscope, pull the #6 plug and look yourself. On a car with a 9A1 motor this would not be high on my concern list anyway.
