Typical price of Bore Scope inspection
I've got a .2 that I'd like to have scoped to rule out scoring. My friendly dealer is quoting me $1,400 - I'm wondering if they are thinking a teardown for the much?!? What have others paid? If I go to an indy would their report hold up with PCNA if there was an issue? (I'm in CPO)

What's their hourly rate?
Here in the Bay Area, it's $275/hr at the main dealers and typically $160/hr at a local indy. It adds up...

Hergesheimer in Lake Forest PPI'd a 997.1 that I'm in the process of buying. I asked Mark how much for a bore scope inspection and he said, he wouldn't even consider it on a 997.1. He believe's whole bore scoring is overhyped and very rare. Give him a call and see what he says.

Borescoping through the spark plug holes can possibly give a false negative. Mine was clean as a whistle when scoped that way, but when the engine was apart, scoring was observed on the piston skirts and area of cylinders hidden by the pistons at their innermost position on a stroke. The only way a scope could have seen it would have been from underneath, with the pan dropped.

I agree that a bore scope would be ideal before buying, but it's pretty intrusive / costly. I don't think the dealer would be willing to do such an intrusive inspection as part of a PPI. I could ask, though. Thank you so much for the advice!

Ah, a 996.2.
$1,400 seems very high.

on this site. He has some good contacts and labor rates in the Washington State area for bore scoring inspections. He has provided what they charged him a couple of times recently.Last edited by Ericson38; 11-13-2022 at 12:26 AM.

Vertex in miami recently quoted $475 for PPI and an additional $600 for a bore scope. I didn’t call in to find out the details, it was someone that is considering buying my 997.1, so I don’t know if the scope would be through the sump or the plugs. I’d imagine the sump for that amount. They told the guy that the PPI would detect any major red flags and that it may not need to be scoped but I’d scope it if I were buying.

I just set up a PPI and bore scope for a 997.1 I am looking at in Scottsdale, AZ. Total price is $715 with $355 being the PPI portion. Includes documentation and photos of the bore. Quote and provider is a an Indy.

Great info I wish I had seen prior to my purchase:
