Default Over-rev data (would you buy this car?)

Hi all,

I am looking at a 997 turbo with 38k miles on the clock. Here are the results of the DME download over-rev data:

Total engine operating hours = 436 hrs

1 @ 408hrs 4591
2 @ 402hrs 609
3 @ 332hrs 89
4 @ 59hrs 26
5 = zero over-revs
6 = zero over-revs

Could anyone give me some expert advice here? It would appear that it requires a compression test. It has hardly done any miles since it's oil change with the current seller, so I guess that would mean that oil analysis would have little value? Would you buy it or not? The dealer is offering a warranty, which covers the engine, for 6 months, but I will only be doing around 500-1000 miles per year in it.

Many thanks for your help.

Consensus here is that range 1-2 wont really hurt the car so those should be ok, even though they are fairly recent, within the 30 hours.

A lot of people say if range 3-4 are more than 50 hours old and there haven't been any issues, then they are likely ok too.

Its not a perfect DME but I think its ok.

Pass.

38,000 miles and 436 hours is an average speed of over 87 MPH. NFW! The books have been cooked.

Also,

Range 4 overrevs at 60 hours is most likely within break-in period. Conservatively, if they averaged 20 mph, that clocks in at 1,200 miles for a moneyshift. Given the possible average speed in the post above, this car was abused during run-in.
Walk away.

Or used exclusively as a track car?? Altering the total running hours down does not make much sense unless you were going to cook the mileage number as well - as you noticed!!!

Something looks a bit funny would be good to know what it is.......

Agreed - highly improbable. Or, could it be a second engine?

Is it tuned? Could explain some of the oddities.

Tunes usually can explain a lot of range 1 and range 2 revs, but this is a whole new kind of mystery. Giving previous owners the benefit of the doubt, my guess would be the engine was replaced or rebuilt and someone reset the DME for it. (Or actual operating hours are 1436.)

It's possible the DME has been replaced for some reason or there's a piggy-back tune here that's doubling the operating hours and making the average speed so high. Not sure how you'd get to the bottom of this unless it's being sold by the PO who had the tune done and can explain it.

Some history checking needed here, most cars average 35-45mph as you have to allow for parking, reversing, stopped at red lights. even if your a very fast driver you will struggle to average 55mph.
When buying a car like this if you have the slightest doubt walk away. There will always be another one around the corner, and if you buy this one you'll never be happy with it, it will nag you every time you drive it. (will it breakedown, what was that noise) It will drive you crazy even if ther is nothing wrong with it.

Not "doubling the operating hours".....I think you meant to suggest 1/2-ing the op hours.

Please check the operating hours in airbag control unit (POSIP). They should be about 10-15% higher than operating hours in engine control unit.
It seems to me that the odometer adjustment guy made a calculation mistake when he adjusted the operating hours in engine control unit.
