Default IMS failure

I have a 2005 carrera s, with about 130k miles. I just had an incident and my mechanic thinks it might be an IMS failure (says possibly catastrophic). What are my options? Is Porsche liable in any way? I heard there's a lawsuit. Can someone please advise what they'd do (or what they think the best options are). Would it be best to buy a new engine (rebuilt), or, put that money toward another newer 911? If rebuilt, any suggestions as to who to go to in Northern CA? I love that 911!

Why would Porsche be liable? What was the "incident"? Before you get too worked up over this maybe find out what the problem is - it may not be IMS bearing.

LOL. 130k miles on an almost 13 year old car is alot.... not a single manufacturer will help re any sort of a claim with a car re that age+ milage .... thats well over 200,000km.

So it is okay for engine to grenade and paperweight the car at 130,000 miles? Does it matter if the cause was a known manufacturer defect? I agree it is a super long shot, especially if you don't have any established relationship with a dealer over an extended period of time and do all your services there. If so, one might could get some partial goodwill contribution. I have actually gotten 100% goodwill on replacement engine with a serious over rev just due to my long term relationship with that dealer so stranger things are possible.

Dude is correct. There was a lawsuit and an issue, but he is also asking for advise as to best avenue not ridicule. Isn't replacement M97 minus core exchange about $17k? I personally would sell roller and purchase an 09 or later rather than putting money into a car with 130k on the odometer.

Best advice is to figure out what is truly wrong with it. Proper advice will follow.

Anyone who is going to purchase a 911 used and spend 30-70 gr , I would think would do some due diligence. I did, and bought a .2 thinking I Was safe , but I now know I could end up with a 15 gr pdk bill. Am I happy , no but if I want to play I have to pay and Im okay with that. Not sure what other car will give you the experience that we all feel when we jump in our cars and go go go ........and we all like to see others enjoying the same experience in their pcar.......to think that the manufacturer is liable 12 - 13years after the vehicle was bought is .........well...... priceless

sorry I digressed from the op ? You love the car , fix it and enjoy. Otherwise you take the hit for selling as a roller or scam it off on an unknowing buyer. Not nice. And then takethe hit on a newer model that may have its inherent disastrous flaws.

Its a porsche, there is no substitute, Be passionate and enjoy the ride

Call my Hotline tomorrow, and talk to Jud :-)

BTW_ Everything these days is an "IMS Failure", whether it is, or isn't. The IMS has such a bad rep, that its an easy victim. We know the exact symptoms of this, and in most cases can conform, or rule out an IMS failure on the phone.

If it's IMS the engine will not even turn around. As mentioned you will also find lots of metal particles and pieces in the oil pan. I would also make 100% sure it's really IMS before doing more. Could be that the mechanic see possibility for extra bucks. I have seen this here before: A guy saying he had IMS catastrophic failure drove the car up on a flat bed. Engine was starting etc. With IMS failure you cannot drive the car and not even start it. The engine is more or less exploded inside.

Many 2005 has had the IMS replaced. Are you the first owner? please check these things first

IMS Bearing failure is a progression through 4 stages of wear.

The engine still runs at stages 1-3, only at stage 4 failure is the valve timing compromised, and ultimate failure occurs.

Any engine that may have a pending mechanics failure should not be started. Not under any circumstance.

There was a class action lawsuit but it doesn't look like you'll be able to benefit from it. Here: No Class Member will be entitled to any payment or reimbursement for any IMS related engine damage or replacement occurring to a Class Vehicle more than ten (10) years after the vehicle was placed in service and the New Car Limited Warranty commenced, or after 130,000 total miles on the vehicle, whichever comes first.

If it does turn out to be IMS failure and the engine is done, Unless the car has special options or lots of upgrades, at 130,000 miles its probably better to sell the roller or part it out if you have the time and ability, moving on to another example.

If IMS, we're going to want to know which bearing was in your car smaller or larger.

If you decide on the replacement motor, RND Engines will give you the quickest turnaround on a stock displacement. If you want to upgrade, then FSI can build you one, but it will have a lengthy lead time.
