Default Front struts going. How easy to replace DYI?

My front HOOD struts are pretty much shut. How do I replace them myself without causing any damage to the screws on the hood, etc.

thanks

You have a C4S, it might be a little different than my C2S 997.1. In the past I used to try to replace struts without removing the carrier. Now with more experience I find it easier to just take things apart. I'm sure most would say I'm over doing it but it only takes 30 minutes. On my C2S I do the following (order may vary):

- Remove brake caliper and tie off to the side.
- Pop the outside tie rod off the carrier.
- Remove bolt from lower control arm (wishbone) at cross member.
- Remove bolt from forward control arm at cross member
- Remove drop link at strut. Be careful the carrier could fall right off strut. It likely won't though because the wishbone and forward control are need to be wiggled loose.
- With the carrier removed you'll want to mark the location of the three strut studs/bolt in the frunk area. Then loosen them carefully and pull your strut and spring out.
- I think you can take it from here.

If you put everything back together correctly you probably won't need an alignment. Worth getting it checked though.

Now on a C4S I don't know if the carrier pulls off the drive shaft. I think Pelican has a DYI and shows it.

Thumbs up

alexb76,

Simple DIY job. The struts have ball sockets on the ends, so they just snap off and on. Will not take you more than ten minutes.

If only most other DIY projects were so easy.

Thanks guys. Just got the parts from sunset. There are 996 instructions online, do the 997 works just like those? A clip that comes off and snap in place?

For anyone needing to replace front hood struts-also called gas springs. Here is the link to my post elsewhere for a different, less expensive alternative to OE parts.

Best upgrade I did on my car. I was getting tired of the hood falling on my head. Ordered my parts from Pelican. I wish I would have replaced them sooner.
