Default Does a 2006 with a past failed emission scare you away?

This would be my first Porsche and I'm looking at a very nice two owner 2006 911 Cabriolet. It has 43,000 miles on it but failed emissions in March of 2012 and again in April of 2012 at about 38,000 miles. It then passed in April of 2012. Fast forward to 2017 and it passed in April of 2017 and again in July of 2017 - twice. Guess they wanted to make sure it was O.K. because that is three in all recently.

So, the current history on it is fine. But being cautious with my first purchase, would the emission history bother you, or would you think problem fixed and the car is good to go.

Thank. RJ

If it was not fixed right, then it would not pass. Don't worry about it. Note that these cars can be pricey to repair, its not a Honda or Toyota. Keep that in mind, and if it causes you to lose sleep then don't buy one. Harsh but true.

Reason(s) for failed test?? You need to find this out. Could be as simple as a monitor not ready.

I would pass. You are not fully informed and therefore not suited to make a good judgment. Many things could have resulted in failure.... someone had a crazy tune or go-fast parts, or the cats could be failing due to a too rich tune.... and on and on.

My 2009 has not tripped an emissions related light in 118K miles and my Boxster never did in 197K miles (other than an o2 sensor but that is an easy diagnosis).

Forget it. THere are more cars out there and Porsches can be really expensive to fix ... especially if you are chasing ghosts.

Peace

Agreed - you would need to get more detail. Before I purchased mine it had the battery disconnected for some work, resetting all of the monitors and resulting in an initial CA failed smog test. Driving it through the recommended cycle corrected things and I passed the next one with no problem.

I recently sold my 2005 Boxster to a gentlemen and right after he bought it there was a evap issue. A shop thought they could fix it and did a reset...well he needed to get it inspected and had to drive the heck out of it to get a clear inspection. It will show two failed inspections and only because the car wasn't ready to be inspected. It was a long ordeal. The car is just fine, it was like a gas cap issue (I bought him a new one) but the shop that worked on it said it was something else.
