Default Quick and somewhat urgent question about overrev report

I'm looking another '06 C2S. I posted details in a followup to my earlier purchase that I ended based on a PPI.

I have a quick opinion question. The current owner is taking the car to a specialty shop this afternoon where I have scheduled a PPI. He has a Durametric tool that he has used for resetting service codes and decided to check to see what the DME report had to say prior to the PPI.

He called me to let me know that there were some overrev conditions that showed up from some prior owner. They are:

Range 1 9827/2195.6 hours
Range 2 1704/2099.7 hours
Range 3 932/1973.9 hours
Range 4 801/1785.8 hours
Range 5 671/1785.8 hours
Range 6 76/1581.7 hours

Total hours 2293.6

Thus far he has appeared to be very straighforward and knowledgeable. He has said the car has never exhibited any running issue or inappropriate oil use/oil pressure, etc. The timing would indicate that this is from previous owners.

He offered to pull the plug on the deal. I said to move forward with the PPI. I understand the math but cant make the conversion from cycles to time but my sense is that the Range 3 - 6 time is very short and any repercussions should have shown up in 71,000 miles.

Based on proportion of total hours compared to miles on the AutoCheck (crude but informative), the Zone 4,5, and 6 overrevs happened in early to mid-2011.

HOWEVER, I would very much appreciate comments or experiences from this board.

Thanks.

Agree.. car has surely been driven hard. However the hours were along time ago so I wouldn't worry too much. Make sure the shop doing the ppi understands bore score and is looking for that.

In either case, use this as a hard negotiation .

500 hours since the "bad" ones, and not that many of the 1-3s. I bet it checks out fine and is good to go (apart from unrelated bore scoring and the like). Any idea how many overrevs your E39, Z3 or Mini have on them?

When I had my recent ppi done at a dealer in so cal I was told that ignitions in range 5&6 Porsche will void your warranty... mine had 0 in range 5&6, range 4 had 5 ignitions. I was told the car was driven aggressively but not beat..

I'd pass. That report is indicative of the car being driven by someone who doesn't know how to drive a manual. It's had at least two very bad money shifts. Your comfort level may be more forgiving than mine.

Personally I would pass on cars with range 4-6 over-revs. Shows at least two money shifts like Hella-Buggin' said.

Another thing to think about is how long do you plan on keeping the car. With range 4-6 over-revs, you're going to severely limit the audience for the car when you plan on selling.

Thanks for the good input. As posted in a parallel thread, I passed on the cradle to this and other concerns. As to y our point about resale, I would guess I will have the car about 5 years and not put more than 3-5k per year on it, Will maintain it properly, so not used up. That would support me getting one with no obvious issues.

Thanks.
