Does anybody know or can provide me with the thickness of the grip on the 991 360mm GT Sport steering wheel? Circumference works just as well.
I like the 360mm diameter of it compared to the standard 375mm bus wheel but thickness of the grip is also important to me, I prefer thicker, and I don’t see it listed or mentioned anywhere. I want to take the plunge but I also don’t want to be upset if I do and the grip is thin like the standard wheel.

Success!!!!! Just for everyone's edification... my journey has successfully ended in a working horn.
I have a 2007 997.1 TT manual that I put a 997.2 (or early 991 or 987).
Installed the wheel no problem (went from non-MF to non-MF manual).

992 steering wheel?

Hi everyone,
I’ve tried finding the information on the numerous threads about steering wheel upgrade but I couldn’t find a definitive answer so I’m hoping someone can chime in to help me understand.
I currently have a 997.2 Carrera S with PDK and original multifunction steering wheel (with buttons for PDK shifting). I do NOT like that wheel at all and would like to replace it.
I had the SportDesign steering wheel in my 997.2TT and it was perfect but they are super pricey. I’m thinking about upgrading to a 991 steering wheel with multifunction and paddle shifters, do not care about heating as I live in Spain.
My questions:
- do I need to look for a specific model or would any recent wheel work (I’ve seen quite a few Macan or Panamera wheels from 2015-2018 on eBay for instance, see screenshot at the end of this post)?
- can I reuse the airbag from my current steering wheel or do I need a new one?
- I understand I will need to purchase the adapter. Is that enough or will I need a PIWIS to be plugged in?
Bonus question: my ideal replacement would be the multifunction steering wheel with paddles and the mode selector on the wheel, but I have not seen anyone achieving this, anyone know if this is doable?
My level of skills is: I have installed the carplay upgrade on my head unit, I can wrench within reasonable limits, I don’t know or care too much about fiddling with electrical or electronics stuff, so would rather stick to some plug and play options (including adapter of course).
Thanks so much! I will be happy to document and share the process once I have it figured out.

Any Macan/718/991.2 wheel will work. You dont want the newer panamera or cayenne wheels (with the more square style buttons). They require a new wiring harness
- can I reuse the airbag from my current steering wheel or do I need a new one?
New one (like above, round with chrome ring). Careful buying one from Russia/surrounding areas... Better to buy new OEM
- I understand I will need to purchase the adapter. Is that enough or will I need a PIWIS to be plugged in?
Dont think you need PIWIS since your car is already multifunction. Confirm with GPSadapter when you buy their kit

Not able to add the mode selector

FYI, you can buy a brand new MF GT Heated wheel on Suncoast for $1k.
Just put in your VIN and they will configure the wheel for you, without the sport controller.
Mine came like the below, I ended up ditching the MF and deblinging it.
However instead of wading into the world of Eastern European used parts on eBay I decided to buy a new steering wheel and bag.
To me it was worth it since I wanted to make sure the bag was repackaged/defective and I wanted fresh leather and not worn down leather.

My intent long term is to have the leather replaced with the Natural Brown leather I have on the current wheel and in the rest of the interior (and probably have it "deblinged" like you did to better match the 997 aesthetics), so I am ok with leather that is not new. The airbag is definitely the area that concerns me a little here, I might purchase that new to be safe.
Also, being based in Spain, I will explore European alternatives to Suncoast, because we get hit with crazy taxes when it reaches EU customs.
