Easier on the plastic? I plan on using a paper towel inside it to prevent scratches

the aluminum/factory piece will have less deflection, but a good fitting steel one works very well too...

Mangling the plastic cap is usually a result of not seating the filter socket all the way down before applying torque, causing it to slip off. I found seating it all the way and only then inserting the 1/2 socket wrench prevents this.

BTW, Mercedes uses the same size.

Guys, its 74.5mm 14 flute. Go to pepboys. They have one labeled "Dodge Sprinter" filter. If you look closely its 74.5mm 14 flute. Fits absolutely perfect. The 76mm ones I got spun on the filter.

74.5mm is correct, but some '76mm' fit excellently and are probably more widely available, all depends on the variance in the tool
My '76mm' Jet Tools wrench fit perfectly on both Porsche and Mercedes filters

I just got this one. Amazon prime, tried it last night and it fits perfect. I had ordered a 76mm and it did not fit properly.
