Let me first start off with saying that I am hunting a good condition 996T. I've done lots of research on them the past month or so to get an idea of general problems they have. (2nd gear, spoiler hydrolics, clutch, etc)

The problem here, is I already have a weekend toy car. I've had it for years and there is a rediculouis amount of blood sweat and tears in it. I'm not willing to part with it to make the 911 my toy. I have always wanted a 911 turbo though.

I could afford to purchase a 996t, but dont want to end up with two garage queens. Id like to just daily drive a 996t most of the year with the exception of the worst parts of winter when salt makes its way onto the road. That would allow me to really enjoy it.

What Id like to know is, how many of you are DDing your 996t? How does it hold up? Have you found it to be an overly expensive DD? Besides gas, what do your yearly total outlays look like? (minus big scheduled preventatives such as the 60k one)

If anyone happens to do their own work to the cars, cost for parts seperately would be great. Im not a mechanic by trade, but easily could be given past experiences. (ie, Ive rebuilt engines and been racing for the last 14yrs as a hobby) So I would likely be doing any needed work myself.

I DD my GT2 all Spring to Fall, except where I have to leave it in questionable places, use my beater for that. My neighbour DD's his 996TT all year except on snowy days.
Tires and fuel $$$ if driving it 'right'.
Easy to work on and parts are fairly priced.

 

I don't DD mine. It's my toy. That said they hold up well as DDs if you treat them right.

 

DD mine, when not working on it. Not much salt on our roads.

 

i dd'd my last one. this one's too stiff/rough for dd, excepting rare necessity.
but it sure is more fun when i drive it... mostly daily lol

 

I DD mine. I have driven it for about 5,000 miles now and it's great as a DD. I am getting ready to renew the suspension because I have some creaks and rattles. Keep up the routine maintenance and having it as a DD is great.

 

Just like 993GT unless there is salt on the roads I DD mine as much as possible.

 

dd rain snow salt...roughly 12-15k a year.
stays home when more than 3-4in snow though as i have problem with clearance

 

DD here and put about 8k miles on it this last year. I do drive another car about once a week so it doesn't just sit, but the TT is my primary. Just as easy to drive this car as a DD as any other car. And I find that I'm more excited to go to work when I get to drive my TT.

She does get a work out though in her DD role. I drop my daughter off in the morning before heading into work. And will often be the lunch car for myself and another couple coworkers. They like it so much, they actually ask to get stuffed in the rear just to ride in it.

 

I dd mine except when the salt flies in my area. They're great cars!

No I don't. Mine is not stock, it's too low, too stiff, in to good of condition, and not an automatic. I drive 200 km everyday and our winters are terrible. My roads are covered in sand and the car would be carrying lbs of sand in all the crevices and under body and suspension where the sand would end up. My car is a weekend driver in the summer and track toy. It looks pretty much like a garage queen and I like it that way.

That's not to say they wouldn't be great if they were stock. I am actually looking for a beater to run everyday. Was thinking of a high mileage 997.1 Turbo for this. It's got better AWD for winter and slightly better fuel consumption. Though if an Arctic silver/on black 996 Turbo tiptronic coupe with stock suspension came up for the right price I'd seriously consider it. Though tips are more common in the 997 generation.

 

^ a 997.1TT with the '220'/LSD option(think it was a 6 speed only) would be a great winter car!
I was driving a stock 996tt a couple weeks ago, definitely happy year-round.

since you were asking about costs... some people who voted were garage queens, some were dds and track cars... but gives an idea.

 

haha. you guys are funny. i'd get the 997.1 for date night, leave it *mostly* stock ( or at least leave of the decals HA ) and REALLY trash/thrash my current souped up car..though it's not like i dont already
