Sumitomos-7,000 miles down to wear bars
I put Sumis on my car 7,000 miles ago, and the inside rears are almost to wear bars. Now trying to decide to replace the rears, or switch to something else. I know the threads are long on tires. Just wondering if 7k miles are the norm for the rears with this tire.

Replace the worn tires with new Sumi tires if you otherwise like the Sumi tires then have the car properly aligned.
Unless you have a right foot that earned you the nickname "Big Foot" those tires should last double that 7K miles, easy. I've managed 23K miles out of Bridgestones.

I had sumo's. Lasted 12,000. When the rears wore out I put Falkens on the rear. Whenever I went on the freeway the car would change lanes by itself. Whenever I went around a corner the car would shake violently and the PSM and ABS lights would flash. I ended up putting Falkens on the front. Now everything is working like it should. Im not real happy with the Falkens and will put sumo's back on next time, they seem like a pretty good tire for a pretty good price. I don't need the high buck Michelin PS2s, I can't even outdrive the sumo's.

Running sumitumos on my GT3 and I've got 11K miles on them... They look perfect and I'm at well over 80%. Last set I had on the 996TT had well over 15K miles on them when the car was sold and they were well over 60%. Lance, you've got an alignment issue.
As to the comments about the Michelins. Well they're great, but twice the price. If you don't need "perfect", but are OK with an 85-90% as good a tire for half the cost, the Sumis are pretty darned good, for the money.

Well it seemed that I only got 10-13 k miles out of my 993turbo rears as well. Same wear pattern inside corners. I was expecting the similar or better with the 996. I do drive pretty aggresive. My average fuel economy is 13.5 to 15 or so. Perhaps this has something to do with the tire life? If driven aggresively, would the inside rears wear most?

Put Sumi's on the 996 GT3 street wheels that don't seem to spend much time on the car recently and just bought my second set for the 996tt in oem sizes put have not driven on them yet. It will be a DD and pretty well retired from hard driving on a road course or drag strip.
Looking forward to seeing how they work on the tt since they were very cost effective. My alignment if I recall is neg 1.5 front and neg 1.7 rear which seems a tad agressive for 100% street but we shall see.

The PS2s provide great handling in both wet and dry conditions, and with my X73 suspension they provide a great ride. I had considered a tire with stiffer sidewalls, but in the end I decided that my suspension was plenty stiff/rough as it was, and the last thing I needed was more "stiffness". The PS2s were a great choice for my street driving, cross country cruising, and occasional mountain curves hammering use of my car.
In the case of the PS2s, you get what you pay for.

+1 on the PS2s. 10k On mine and I still have life left. Great tires.
I am debating going cheaper for the next set as I just use the car as a DD and do not drive hard 99% of the time

This can result in uneven tire wear. The insides can wear faster and the right rear tire can wear faster than the left rear tire.
Unless you're sure the alignment is spot on you should consider at least having it checked/set. Given the way you drive you may never get 23Kmiles from a set of rear tires but you should do way better than 7K miles.

But you still get plenty of chances -- maybe more chances because there's not the risk of a cop behind every bush like there is in town -- to nail the throttle coming out of a corner.

i go through two sets of rear ps'2 annually and my alignment's fine. but count me in also on the ps2's being the tire choice best suited to this car. though i didn't mind the oem pirelli's. i am truly leaning toward trying a fresh set of the yoko advans or the even the ( god help me ) hankook rs3's. but i may be kidding myself with these choices, because my car understandably likes german tires.
all that said with fresh ps'2s on.
