I'm a random WSJ reader and old RL member (hence my user name is my actual name) and hopeful 996TT owner (on the search for one) who found this thread.
So great. I read every post in this thread tonight. Chuckled at some of the prices from 10+ years ago.
Congrats @T2 on living the dream in a car you love.

80k miles on mine. Underneath is bone dry with not a single rusty bolt. Car spent its entire life in southern California before I bought it. Only issue I have is the dreaded foam coming out of the HVAC vents I plan to fix ASAP.

He's on his 2nd one apparently. Most manual transmissions are more or less toast by 150k-200k from what I have experienced.
I just re-read this thread and apparently this car is an X50. Those bigger K24 turbos probably contribute a bit to longevity..

My first Porsche a 944 I bought with 250,000mile on the clock and I sold it with about 290,000 for more than I paid for it. That's when I knew Porsches are special. Now my tippy has 32,000 and manual has 70,000 and i live in a place with excellent public transportation. I wish I could drive more. Here most people sell cars around the 50,000 miles range. So sad.
