Default Is the X50 really as fast as 997TT??

I'm looking to purchase a 997tt but the better prices of the 996tt kinda distracted me and I started searching info about them. The X50 option though not that desirable because a reflash can do as good if not better, is quite fast out of the box.

So I found this article: http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...0/viewall.html

They have the x50 at 11.9 at 120mph. That's pretty much 997tt.

So if I'm "only" interested in performance, wouldn't a X50 be just as good?

Now, how reliable a 2002 X50 would be?

The X50 isn't any more or less reliable than the regular cars from what I've read (not sure why it would be).

What is the price delta between a good X50 and a good 997.1 car? Quarter mile times aren't everything, and I wouldn't mind having the VTG technology in the newer cars. I haven't driven a 997 before, but I wouldn't be surprised if it rides and handles better as well.

Make sure to drive both cars and beware the pitfalls of putting too much stock in magazine drag times. Hopefully a more seasoned Porsche vet can weigh in on the differences between the cars.

I've been told the early 997 turbos have issues with the bottom end of there engines and the 996 engine is pretty much bullet proof and a better choice because of that. There is also aesthetics to put in the equation. You can get a 996 TT and easily upgrade and spend less money than on a stock 997TT.
IMHO

The interiors are quite different if that makes any difference to you, but I think the bottom ends of both engines are the same.

The $46,000 TT X50 I tested was amazingly fast ! The 997 is better looking.

What year and mileage?

I'm looking at a 2002 30k miles X50. I think I could have it for around 57k$can.

Cars in Canada are always a bit more expensive. I feel that under 55k$ the price would be very good. So I'm kind of wondering if I should just wait for a better deal.

I have to think performance/reliability wise they are pretty close. It really becomes an aesthetic decision.

As others have written, drive them both and buy the one you like.

997tt is 50kg heavier and has 30bhp more. This means 10bhp per ton more than xp50. They are nearly identical in performance.

You mean 944? Damn right.

I also believe 996tt is better looking than 997tt. I don't care what other people say. And I also prefer curvy interior of 996tt. Cars are like music some like disco some like heavy metal. Each to their own.

Two different animals in terms of power delivery. The variable vane turbochargers on the 997TT will allow "more" torque off idle to redline. More power under the curve. Driving the two also yields a different "feeling" The X50 will have more lag or "pause" before they start to get on boost.

I am NOT saying which is better. Drive both cars and see which animal you like.

I think the 996TT has variable vane turbochargers too.

I can assure you that the 996TT does not have the variable vane turbocharger.

Yes, you are correct. I didn't realize.
