Battery dead this morning. I put it on a charger before leaving for work, but forgot to grab the OM.
Do I need a special battery, or can I get one that will work at the autoparts store? If I need something special, I'd like to get it while I'm in town today and I'll just have a spare. The one that's in it is almost 4 years old, so it's about that time.

There have been threads and part numbers for the OEM battery, the Interstate battery and others.
Just remember to always conenect the vent hose.

My indie supplies Interstate batteries and I had to get one last month after about 4 years also. Unfortunately I can't remember the size code. That is all you'd need.

Thanks. So it looks like Groups 47, 48, and 49 will all fit?
Thinking about a 49 since I have the remote top on the cab and regularly raise and lower the top with the engine off.

Before you disconnect your old battery, think of some way to preserve all of the ECU readiness codes and your radio code (if that's the same as the 993). You can plug a 9V source into your cigarette lighter or very carefully connect your charger to the cables (do not let them touch anything) before you disconnect. I also saw a gizmo at Autozone that connects another car (via its cig lighter) to your OBD2 port to keep it all preserved. That one scares me a bit.

As for an Interstate, I just went through this. The best one you can get to bolt right in is the MTP-94R/H7. It's 765 CCA and is the same size as a stock one. I tried putting the H8 in the car, but it would not fit as the last hole in the battery tray has no threading in it.

Thanks guys. I got home a bit ago and it started right up after charging. Drove it around for about 20 minutes. Turned it off and then restarted a couple of times.
I'm going to let it sit and see if it will hold the charge overnight. If not, new battery tomorrow. Maybe new battery anyway.

Swapping out batteries in my car gave me no issues with the radio or having to input a code or anything. Everything worked again as normal.

Interstate makes a direct replacement. It's a far better battery then the Porsche.

Had zero problems all day today running errands. 8 stops and starts. Actually it's cranking faster than it ever has.
I have a spare sitting in the garage, but I think I'll let it ride and see what happens.

Optima bracket, 50 bucks...http://www.yellowdogmotorsports.com/ . 10 more to ship it. I got the extended positive cable from them too...makes life much simpler.
Optima 34R via amazon.com for 138 total (free shipping if you are an amazon prime customer...) shipped.
Best investment to date...you do need to use a trickle charger...I use one that plugs into the cig lighter.
No leaking. Save some weight. Looks cool. Going on 5 years. The health per my big charger (a Schumacher) and the dealer of the batter is good....

I am wondering if my 03 996tt needs a radio code. I have the NAV and its the first year for the MOST system. Book says i need a code for the radio and NAV yet the dealer can not find a code for it on their computer. Does anybody know for sure before i change the battery out?
