Default Need mod advice (on a budget) - Exhaust and Flash

Looking to target around 525-550 crank HP (so a 125+ HP increase over stock +/-). Not trying to break the bank (but willing to spend for quality parts) or win any quarter mile/60-120 races. Just want a little more grunt, and do so most economically.

So you know what I am working with, I am driving a bone stock '01 TT w/ Tip S.

From what I've gathered here and other sites and what 've been told, an ECU flash and exhaust is the way to go.

Based on all the feedback, I've stawmanned the following:
* Softronic ECU flash
* Exhaust - read so much about Europipe Stage 2 that I was ready to check off this box, when I read on their site they don't recommend it for Tips; Really need some recommendations here. Should I do 100 cell cats? A friend suggested 911tuning for a custom exhaust.
* DVs - not sure what brand I should go with
* BMC filter
* Silicone boost hoses - read a lot of folks here think the stock hoses will do just fine. Do I need these?

One last question, with the above mods, will I be OK with the stock 3.8 FPR, or should I go with a 5 bar?

Thanks. I'll hang up and listen.

Send a PM to RL member "Kevin", a regular expert contributor to this forum.
Do exactly what he recommends.

P.S.
you will likely run across a member "LVDell"
you're safe, since he doesn't believe in modifying 996 Turbos.
don't believe me, look at the top of the forum, he has a thread to prove it.

To get that you will need to up your turbos to K24, larger intercoolers, flash, and exhaust. The BMC filter will not help, and neither will the silcone hoses. In fact BMC needs to be oiled = MAP sensor failure. Stay with the stock air filter it provides enough to do modest mods. DV just allow for more boost pressures. So the real hit is from the flash, and the larger turbos, and intercoolers. You might even want to get a Tip SW upgrade too to provide better shift points. Be careful with the smaller cell cats. Some have complained they trip off a CEL due to the sensor seeing less reaction.

I thought the flash + exhaust was good for 100+ HP. Is that not accurate? Definitely interested in upgrading the TCU to take advantage of the 250 maps and quicker shift response.

Ditto on Kevin. If I remember correctly he told me that I could get to about 550 at the flywheel with just a flash. Double check that though. My memory isn't what is was.

From what I've been able to gather, the exhaust gets you a better sound, but doesn't buy you much in the way of HP, and most aftermarket intakes actually cost you HP. The engine breathes pretty efficiently from the factory.

If budget is an issue, start with one of Kevin's flashes and go from there.

Be curious if anyone on this board has dyno before and after graphs. I have seen claims of 80 to 90 hp gains but not sure based on what benchmark.

It is typical to dyno around 350 to 360HP at the wheels in stock form. My tunes will usually leave you at 435HP at the wheels. The nice benefit is 500ft lbs of torque..

With the Tippy your will have more losses due to the tippy.

I would recommend the Stage 2 Quiet. Most aftermarket exhaust systems with the TIP will give you some drone.

Thanks for the feedback, Kevin. Just emailed you. Would love to chat with you about your ECU program. Give me a shout!!

Listen to Kevin. A UMW flash and Europipe Stage 2 will get you what you want and you will be very happy. Car will run better than stock, best investment you can make.

FYI-

The only reason Stef at europipe does not recommend the EP2 LOUD for the tip is that when cruising at 55-65 the rpms fall into a resonance band that can be annoying. (drone) Not so with the Quiet version.

Very happy with my UMW choice.

Plus one on the UMW flash. Get a top of the line exhaust (there are a few). Stay with the stock air filter and unit. Then work on suspension issues. Then safety. Then ......

My exhaust is a Switzer fwiw.

Best of luck. Too much fun.

I will also throw in, if you can not or do not want to afford a europipe exhaust I have been very happy with my milltek. No drone and excellent build quality.
