My "Porsche Approved," "N-Spec Oil Change"
All,
Thanks to kevin's advice on the forum, I performed a fun oil change yesterday.
I'd been running M1 TDT 5w40, and wanted to try out Delvac 1 ESP 5w40. The TDT really quieted the IMS noise in my car, but started to come back after 1,500 or so miles- which to me meant the oil was starting to shear. I was able to confirm with Mobil that TDT is NOT a generic Delvac anymore- but they couldn't give me any useful information other than that. They did vaguely elude to the fact that the Delvac is more heavy duty, so I'm wondering if the IMS noise will not reappear as quickly.
I pulled fuse C4 (who likes to hear that terrible clatter of a motor running with no oil in it), removed all 4 drainplugs, and cut open my oil filter.
Nice to see NO metal shavings at all!
8.5 quarts of Delvac 1, and my IMS noise is ALMOST non existent.
I'll send in a sample of my TDT I used for 3,002 miles- to compare to the UOI I have for the 0w40 that the previous owner had in the car for 7k and the 5w50 I ran for 3k miles prior to the TDT.

Oh the horror. And your car didn't seize up and stop working? Did PCNA show up at your door to arrest you?
Be careful not following the ever changing and evolving TSB's and Approved lists as rumor has it Porsche knows all and what's best is written on stone tablets.

Thanks for the clarification. It is my case. I've found small chips, about 4 the size of a pen ball and decided to change the type of oil I was using because of the clatter. Now no more clatter and next oil change , I wish won't found any metal.... May be a wishful thinking but I know now my engine is not starving oil on start-up....

Good move. I'm no engineer (or pilot), but the louder the IMS noise, the more metal to metal contact is going on in there.
These diesel (approved for gasoline as well) oils REALLY make a big difference.

You do realize that they WILL come to your house and remove ALL badges from your car now, right? That's what some here would have you think, anyway!
Glad you found no metal in that filter after using that "non-approved" oil... And what are you doing listening to a guy like Kevin from UMW? It's clear he knows nothing about these cars and is not qualified to give technical advice... I mean, who would ever advise using TDT 5W40 TRUCK OIL?
Hahahahaha...

Paul, Thanks for the pics. It does help show other Forum members how simple it is.
BTW, can you post the price and where you bought the Delvac ESP.
NOTE, do not confuse the Delvac ESP with Delvac 1300. The Delvac 1300 is a non conventional blend.

Hey Kevin,
I have been using Shell Rotella 5/40 T6 heavey duty, extreme Temp, full synthetic in my 965. it seems to have been working very well. What about this for our 996TT?

Elliot I wouldn't be running a 5W in a air-cooled engine. It's too light of an oil. Even the air-cooled Mobil VTwin oil is 20W50.
From what I have read on the forums the Shell Rotella changed there formulations. I don't know the facts about it. Get your oil tested and see how it stacks up against the Mobil.

OP- In generic terms what is the main difference between M1 TDT 5w40 and Delvac 1 ESP 5w40? I have been using M1 TDT 5w40 for the last 10k. I like you, found that the IMS noise was quieter early on but it returned after 1000 miles.
