Oil Change DIY (pics)
#16
I followed Kevin's advice last time I changed my oil and added 1/2 quart through the oil filter. When I started the car there was no noise whatsoever from the the engine, like what you might hear when the car hasn't been started for a couple of weeks. As a matter of fact the oil pressure light never even glowed for any amount of time as it does on some engines after an oil change.

So with pulling the fuse, how long do you "crank it over"?
Also, Kevin, can you please verify Jon's statement about doing this beforehand as well? THanks!

To prevent the engine from firing over with fuel trapped in the injector. Please pull/remove the C4 fuse BEFORE you drain your engine oil. Crank the engine over and you might get a quick fire on a couple cylinders..
Do your engine oil change, pour a little oil into the center of the oil filter element (one quart is nice) Once filled, crank the engine over (5 to 8 second in duration) YOu might have to do this 2 or 3 times.. We want to see the pressure gauge move up past 2 bars.
Refit the fuse and start your engine.
This should be a STICKY...

Greatest investment for my garage I ever made. I have been able to do more DIY projects that I ever imagined. Plus, all the local guys come over and get good use out of it as well. If you have the space it is sooooooooooo worth it.

The problem is we don't have a 996 Turbo DIY section.
I'll be doing gearbox oil change, brakes, and brake fluid in my next installment which I will post up. Maybe we can have a STICKY for the DIY with the links to the DIY's in the Turbo forum. Thoughts?
I'll post up a thread (cough cough Lewis) that can get stickified and I'll make sure to keep adding DIY threads to the first post.

Changed my oil and filter yesterday. Last oil change was done by an Indy who charged me extra for the time spent trying to loosen turbo drain plugs... Well I had an extremely hard time loosening said plugs, and when I finally managed to remove passenger side : no washer!
Couldn't remove driver side. I assume there is no washer on that side also. Anybody know the part number for the turbo drain plugs (not the washers, the Plugs).
Thanks to Dell and Streather for the DiY assist.

So they had no washers on the plugs at all? Such half *** work some shops do. Another reason I do all this type of upkeep on the car. At least I know it is done right!

There were washers on the crankcase plug and the oil tank plug.
While the change went smoothly other than the turbo plugs (not any different than any other oil change, but with more plugs), I had the iPad with Dell's write-up and my 996 companion handy - LOL.
