Just changed mine today. It's simple I only wish the oil fill had better access. I almost forgot to counter torque the pan plug. That would be a costly mistake!

I'll be sending an oil sample to Blackstone tomorrow for analysis.

Another thankful user of this thread. Really a simple job but having pictures was helpful as this was the first time wrenching on the 996 engine. Pulling the C4 fuse and filling the filter with a quart is definitely a big plus, instant oil pressure, no oil light or starved sound for the short second or two.

Building the 2 x 12 ramps took longer than the job itself!

Thanks Dell & Kevin.

What are your recommendations for keeping records of this procedure?
In the event of selling your car in the future and not wanting to fall prey the those crafty ones who are trying in any way to devalue 996tt's

I just keep my oil purchase receipt and write the date and mileage on it when I change the oil. That coupled with the Blackstone report I plan on doing every time should be solid documentation. In fact, I think this is better than an invoice from a dealer or indie as it shows a higher level of commitment to the vehicle and a better oil (not sayin') than the dealer would use.

YMMV

Gus, I keep my oil purchase invoices as well as keep a detailed spreadsheet documenting every bit of maintenance done on the car.

Couldn't remove driver side. I assume there is no washer on that side also. Anybody know the part number for the turbo drain plugs (not the washers, the Plugs).

Thanks to Dell and Streather for the DiY assist.
I noticed the last oil change the turbo washers got stuck up in there, the previous time on the bolt. If you have no leaks now I would make a note to check for single washers next time

BTW, excellent write up !

As an FYI the small "O" ring on the stem inside the filter housing that goes into the aluminum housing should be replaced every once in awhile.
If you buy it at Porsche they get a lot of money for this little rubber "o" ring. If memory serves me right around $8.

Does anyone know how much oil the oil tank holds? I just got the oil changed and the oil tank drain bolt has a small oil drip even though a new crush washer was used. I'm going to put another new crush washer in and top up the oil but I'm not sure how much oil to add and I don't want to overfill it.

I also noticed my oil tank drain bolt is 15mm not 19mm like in LVDell's DIY oil change thread.

The crush washer should be copper and about 1.5mm thick; i've had this happen to me a couple of times, I ordered an OEM Porsche washer this time. Expect about 8 Qts, don't underestimate the "gush"! The tank bolt on mine is 15mm too.

Are you sure the tank bolt measured 15mm and you were not confusing it with the case bolt? I don't recall off hand what the bolt width is on the two but maybe they got accidentally swapped?

As far as the tank and how much it holds? The majority of the oil. Don't you remember the geyser of oil when you opened the tank versus the tiny amount that came out of the case?

Also, did you use the copper ring for the tank and the aluminum for the case?

Post up some pics and maybe we can figure this out.
