Same model you've got - 2004 325i. I change the oil at 6500 miles and literally burn maybe 8 oz of oil in that time.

Folks, this thread has some Great information in it.. For the new owners and newbies>> I have a request..

1) If you have posted recently within the last two weeks >> can you re-edit you post to include..

a) Oil you are running >> Motul, Mobil, Penzoil, Amsoil or XYZ...

b) Oil weight 0W40, 5W40, 5W50 or XWXX

c) Oil change interval,, give us your average...

d) Oil added from due to consumption.. Try to use the rate of 1/2 quart per 1000 or 1 quart per 1000 miles...

e) Do you send your oil for testing, No, Yes, Don't care...

f) Do you see any metal in your oil filter Less than 5 bits, or greater than 20 particles..

2) This is a GREAT thread, my personal opinion is to find oils that produce or minimize engine wear AND engine IMS chain noise.

3) If you don't want to include all the info "a thru f" Please just list the ones you want list..

3) Some of us have more than one Porsche, track car, street car, garage queen. list them..

a) Mobil1

b) Oil weight 5w-50

c) Oil change interval,, 4,500km

d) Oil added from due to consumption.. added 1.5 litres in that duration but noticed higher consumption in the last 1500km

e) Do you send your oil for testing, sent a couple of days ago, will report in due course .

f) Do you see any metal in your oil filter, I didnt count... but I'm guessing around 5 bits.

I am now running Penrite 0w-50, did a very spirited/hard 4 day drive 1500km...Zero oil consumption but noticeable engine rattle but this was from the older batch 1220 zinc one which was brought to my attention after the change.... I wonder if the new higher zinc ones would make the engine quieter ?
I would like to try the 5w-60 but waiting on Kevins test on it to see if its suitable.

BTW Kevins UMW flash tune was flawless, it didnt miss a beat....and pulls extremely strong.

Thanks for the great work Kevin

A) Swepco

B) 5/30. (Anyone use this or recommend it?)

C) every 3K miles ... I've owned car for 3 months and only put on 1k mikes

D) appeared to drop .25L in 1K miles (one bar drop), although yesterday it gained one bar (warmer weather?)

E) never checked for wear etc

112,000 miles. car still purrs.

i run a combo of m1 0-40 mixed with m1 5-40. approx 5 qt's of the 0-40 with the remaining 4 qt's being 5-40. since mixing i don't hear any rattle at all, but must say, never really did.

always cut open filter for inspection, and have never seen any bits. thank G. never blackstone'd.

change approx every 3500-4500 miles +/- but never over that.

consistently go thru one qt per 1000 miles. it never deviates. ever and no smoke ever. though i used to hear a SCREECH on occasional startup in 105+ temps. so i add more of the 5-40 ( which i also top off with ).

though my next change i'll be trying out the Penrite PREMIUM SYNTHETIC 0W-50 for the added zinc i've been reading so much about.

props to kevin for all the continuing info and freely given advice/wisdom in here

LLTurbo,

Are you running Swepco 303 Supreme? Do you realize that it is NOT a Full synthetic oil? It is a conventional oil. The 5W30 is going to take a beating with this engine and shear down to a 20 weight. At 100 C Motul is at 13.6 cST. Rotella T6 is 14.2 cST.. Your Swepco 5W30 is 10.1 cST.. As you put mileage on your car, the viscosity drops..

I am NOT ******* your choice of oil, however, this is the wrong GRADE, you have better options. Please read your owners manual. It clearly states which grade you should be running.

I have to quote from KNS recent post..

"After sending in samples to Blackstone and Stavely, the metal wear with the Rotella T6 started to reverse and now, at 163,000 miles, is still on the low side. County emissions inspections pass with no problems with regards to Cat Converter poisoning. It is fine for Diesel and gasoline engines"

The holy grail is finding an engine oil that will reverse the metal wear. We can see that when we send our oil samples in. I don't get monies back from Blackstone>> I have to pay for every test.. In recent years, I have added Shell Rotella T6 to my recommendations because of the proof repeatedly reported in forums.

Thanks, Kevin. I can check with S-Car-Go in San Rafael as that's what they put in my car at my last change. Assumed, maybe incorrectly, that they'd have the right oil dialed in.

Go to the Swepco website and check it out for yourself. Go to the technical specs in pdf's and read them. Compare them to Mobil 5W50.. Compare them to Rotella T6. Even IF you were running the proper weight, you are running a conventional oil in your engine.. Run Valvoline or Brad Penn if you want to run a conventional oil..

I'm with Kevin, not a chance I'd run a 5w30 in my motor. I have a UOA of 0w40 at 7k miles (when I bought the car) viscosity was too low for my comfort.

What is your hot oil pressure at idle? sub 1 bar?

That's a great question...

"What is your hot oil pressure at idle? sub 1 bar?"

LLTurbo, when the engine is hot, with at least 45 minutes of run time, as Paul has asked, what is your oil pressure at idle? Guys on this engine, your oil pressure is a dead give away>>showing how the oil is shearing.. We want the oil pressure near 2.0 bars.. Paul can elaborate on this..

Yes, certain oils (seems the higher the moly content) thin out quite a bit when hot. So, 80+ degree day, slow moving (not much airflow through the radiators)- idle oil pressure can drop quite a bit. from 1.9 to 1.0 bar. Some say 1 bar is sufficient, but I don't like seeing it drop that much on my oil pressure gauge. 5w50 does not thin out much. Motul 300V does thin quite a bit.

I'll check next time, but I don't recall it ever dropping below 2 at idle. Prior owner always used Mobile 1 0w40 ... Or at least that's what he thought Carlsen Porsche put in it at his 3k/services. Looks like I'll be rushing out for an oil change sooner than I expected!

Spoke with S-Car-Go who said they use Swepco 5W30 in all "newer cars" and many of them race with it and have never had a problem with viscosity. Said it has higher zinc levels than other oils, and these engines need oil with more Zinc. Also said it has better additives than Mobil 1.
