Very interesting thread. I confess to worrying about changes in oil blends and if the original thinking is still valid:
M1 5w-50 is best for lower mile, excellent condition turbos
M1 TDT is best for higher mile, some wear, engines
Shell Rotella T6 is not on P approved list, but a fine alternative to M1 TDT.
Mobil Delvac is good. So is Motul 300V
Regardless, M1 5w-50 remains the finest overall for most of us- most expensive and hard to find.
and.. your results may vary.

Thanks Kevin. Great resource.

Lifters were super cheap on any motor I've done work on before....are Turbo lifters too expensive to just replace them all?

After 10k miles of ownership I sent out another oil sample. This sample was my second round using Joe Gibbs Driven 5w-40.

I had 4,100 miles on this sample. Most of the metal numbers have decreased.

05' tts had been running M300V 20/60, which IMHO is an amazing Hi rpm oil for years. Never any metal in the filter after 35k mi. However, the engine rattle was always there. Switched to T6 and the engine is quiet at idle, speed, hot or cold. This is an undeniable fact, and metal to metal noise reduction has always been a major goal. Rattle today T6 tomorrow..

The lifters are about $2000 in parts for all 24.

Hi,

I´m new here and was wondering about this oil:

http://www.mobil1.se/motorolja/peak-life-5w-50.aspx

The link is from Sweden as I live here but, searching for Porsche oil on the site only shows these two, 0W-40 and 5W-30 oil. They do however as in the first link, sell 5W-50.

Is the "peak life" the oil I need? My car will maybe see 1-2 trackdays a year, and some weekend fun, will not be a daily.

http://www.mobil1.se/vilken-motorolja/porsche-olja.aspx

Searching in the international site though, shows the 5W-50 as a Porsche oil.

http://www.mobil1.com.my/products/pr...m-porsche.aspx

I don´t know much about this so asking you guys for help.

I have a 2003 X50 with 19k miles and its been babied his entire life, the service book shows that the oil has been changed every 2000-3000 miles by the former two owners.

I also sent email to Kevin, well I tried to at least but the forum/computer froze up so I don´t know if it got sent.

Thank you guys!

Porsche A40 oil specification
Mobil 1 5W-50 is a fully synthetic engine oil approved by Porsche for cars requiring the Porsche A40 oil specification. Porsche engines requiring the A40 oil specification are factory-filled with Mobil 1 by Porsche"

i have always posited that mobil one 5/50 was an approved oil but was assured my mcbit here it wasn't lol. this tends to support my supposition that i didn't imagine having read of it on a "porsche turbo approved oil list".

i am changing mine today at 5100 miles ( since last change lol ) with a mix of 5/40 and cpl qts of 5/50 for good measure, and because i hear nothing but purring from my motor at idle. not a rattle, ims noise/chain or otherwise, to be heard.

Renntech.org has available for paying members a downloadable Porsche approved oils list.

I get mine from my local dealer service department. The tech will print out the latest for me if I ask.

Last time I checked Mobil 1 5w-50 oil was on the list. One has to be careful. An oil's approval has a limited lifetime and an approved oil may be removed from the list if the oil maker doesn't bother to keep the approval up to date or the oil refiner changes blend, etc.

With you living/driving in Sweden I would be concerned 5w-50 a bit too "thick" for use in the winter season.

On a recent road trip back east leaving the milder temperatures here in CA for the single digit temps for the midwest I was a bit concerned with 5w-50 in the engine but I could do nothing about it at the time.

However, it just so happened on the trip that the 5K mile oil change interval came up and I had the oil changed at a dealer and the dealer used Mobil 1 0w-40 oil.

I am back in CA now but I will leave this oil in the engine until spring time here in CA and then have it changed to 5w-50.

Will be going for 5-50 too, looking forward to hearing the difference from the engine with this oil. Thanks!

I was thinking the same about Swedens site, maybe not updated or something but my guess would be that they don´t list it as a porsche oil beacuse of the winter.

My car won´t be driven during winters, forgat to mention that. I hate what salt does to cars!

Thank you for your input!

Dear 2996ttx50, I think that you need to reread my posts; what I said was that of all the oils on the A40 list, there were only two which were not Xw40 oils and that both of those were Mobil Oils.

...and qualified by the fact that the last Porsche A40 list which I can get my hands on is dated 03/13

If you believe an oil that was once approved but is no longer on the approved list is still ok to use then you believe the approval list has no validity at all.

Just checked an approved oils list. Mobil 1 Peak Life 5W-50 is WW (world wide) oil and approved up to April 30, 2015.

FYI, I can tell you with 5w-50 oil in the engine clatters a bit less upon cold start up and hot idle oil pressure is a bit higher than with 0w-40 oil in the engine.

Run 5w-50 M1 no IMS noise on startup, slightly when warmed up, very little oil consumption. About 1/2 qt every 4000 mile. No smoke on start up, and oil pressure when warmed up at idle is about 2.1 - 2.2 bars. No visible metal in the oil filter at change.
