If you're really ****, then get an oil analysis after 3k, and it'll tell you at least two things:
1 - Is the oil condition still OK to use?
2 - Are there any metals in the oil, indicating either expected or bad-news wear?
Once you get the first info, you can adjust your change frequency accordingly. If
you are the most careful, you'll do an oil analysis with every change.

As a side note, when I sent in my last oil sample for testing, it came back with a note that said I should keep an eye on my bearings because I had so much lead in the sample. Either that or I had used an additive. I remembered that I had accidentally put 6 gallons of 110 leaded race fuel in my tank at the track. I called and talked with one of the chemists and he said it would take awhile to leech out.

Larry, that's not a good thing for your cats either... Converters hate lead... Expect problems down the road... Hard on your 02 sensors as well.

Yea, I know. I was not paying attention and grabbed the wrong pump handle. Hopefully 6 gallons won't be that bad as I kept diluting it with 93 unleaded after each session. I haven't had a CEL or any codes so maybe I dodged the bullet. Others have told me that that small amount isn't enough to cause long term harm. Hope they are right.

Good luck. Dilution didn't help, because the effect was simply cumulative.
Whatever lead you passed ended coating the internals of the cat. You won't
get codes, I don't think, because the car doesn't test it's own exhaust contents
that far back. The only effect is that if you did enough damage to the cats, you
may fail smog emissions tests.

I recognize this is a dead thread, sorry for bringing it back alive, but it seems a good place to clarify whether or not M1 5W40 "Turbo Diesel Truck" is okay. I see 5W40 M1 was on the March 09 Porsche approved list, and that the approval expired 17 October 10.
I had been wanting to go to 5W50 based mainly on Kevin's recommendation, especially as I live in So Cal where it can get very hot (100+). Perhaps the higher weight isn't necessary for me in any case as I don't really need to add but about 1Q in 5000 miles anyway. I guess I just don't drive as hard as most people.
However, I was at OSH yesterday and they had some random special deal of 10% off anything plus Mobil is offering $24 rebates on 10Q of oil. So, as they didn't have 5W50 I went with the 5W40 and was hoping that this was still a legit oil to use. $4.35 per quart was too hard to pass up.

Personally I would not. IMO, these are pretty different oils, not just 'a bit thicker'.
5W50 is IMPOSSIBLE to find at retail. Indeed, this thread highlights it's rarity.

My recommendation is to move away from 0W40..
Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W40 is rated for gasoline engines and alot easier to purchase.. Run it. It is very good.
If you have the patience to mail order 5W50 >> DO SO..
At the end of the day.. It is better to make the switch and change your oil more often.

I recently switched from 5w50 to 5w40 Turbo Diesel Truck. Made a huge difference in the chain noise at idle. It's basically non existent now.
I'm happy with Kevin's recommendation!

Well, it wasn't *bad* for me. When I switched from 0w40 to 5w50 the chain noise didn't get any better. it was pretty darn loud. I also burned a decent amount of oil with the 5w50 (I can't say how much was burned with the 0w40, because that's what it had in it when I bought the car- and I changed the oil immediately).
I'm a big fan of diesel oils because of their higher ZDDP content. When I saw that Kevin recommended the 5w40 diesel, I decided to make the switch. I'd like to use Mobil 1 Delvac 5w40- but I'm not sure if Kevin is a fan of that one.
My oil analysis on 3k miles of 5w50 looked really good- I plan do do another analysis on 3k miles on the 5w40 diesel oil.
Again- the chain/gear rattle was pretty loud at idle (it went away when reved over 1k) especially when hot. Now- it sounds like a normal car- no rattle! Now, I don't know what exactly that means- but it has to be a good thing in my opinion.

I do like 5W50 but it is a mail order item.
Paul Mobil 1 Delvac 5W40 is out of stock everywhere I have looked. Standard Delvac is non synthetic.
Like Paul mentioned, it is a very good thing to get the gear noise reduced. I wish that we could get a Mobil engineer on the forum.
