![Question](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/icons/icon5.gif)
Yesterday, after work, I start the car and immediately get a CEL
I am thinking cracked coil packs (never have been changed, 72K miles in the car)![Confused](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/confused.gif)
Anyway, I used the durametric software and cleared the codes to see if this shows up again.
PO300 - Fault code 507 - Misfire detection
PO306 - Fault code 509 - Misfire detected on cylinder 6
PO303 - Fault code 512 - Misfire detected on cylinder 3
![](http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/misfire.jpg)
Any suggestions? Car is working fine. And after clearing the codes and waiting for a few minutes and started the car no CEL...

Jaime,
I know we've had some really bad rain the past few days, It's probably the packs. The coil packs and plugs are relatively cheap.
Plug change DIY here (I posted a bunch of pics in there too, have more if you need).

if you consistently get #3 and #6 misfire codes, you can, if your ambitious, move the coil packs around to see if the problem follows. that said, they arent too pricey and while you are there might as well change plugs.
If misfires are bank specific and consistent, there is the variocam solenoid bracket problem that has been documented here.

Thank you guys. Just wanted to confirm if I was in the right direction.
Plugs were changed during the 60K service... not really looking to spend on plugs until the next service.
I will get the coil packs and the brackets to get ready for replacing them.

Please replace the plugs with Bosch FR6 LDC and update the coil packs to the new 997TT..
I am getting calls every week, with shop going in and replacing one coil pack or just two. To go back in and replace another coil pack one month later!!
The worst case last month had this very thing happen to a customer, who went and PAID a dealer to replace one coil pack. Then two weeks later he had another coil pack fail right next to the one he replaced.. He had to pay double the labor.. NOW he has a misfire on the first coil pack that he had replaced>>>guess what>>it was the plug that was replaced less than 9000 miles ago.. He is going to pay more than $2000 in labor to get this problem fixed.. I told him to replace everything the second time that this happened. He told me that the dealer said everything was fine!!!! Yes, things are fine everytime YOU have to open your wallet up!!!
Replace ALL the coil packs>> Replace all the plugs with BOSCH FR6LDC and replace the cam solinoid brackets.
Labor will knock a hole in your wallet going back in and correcting these failing parts.

Jaime, the plugs are 5 minutes away when you have the coil packs replaced..
That's why with '01 and '02 I recommend to replace the coil packs when you are doing a plug service. The labor saved pays for the new parts. If you replace the coil pack and the misfire that you have on the plug acts up you will wish you went in and spent the extra HOUR max in labor to replace all the plugs.

Good advice....I had one go bad when the car was delivered...the seller paid to have it replaced...but in retrospect, I shoulda' otta' done the whole enchilada when I changed plugs at 32K. Also...I have read a number of threads about the variocam solenoid bracket as it relates to misfires....might be a good place to start.

Heard you loud and clear. Thank you Kevin!
Will order all coil packs, plugs, and the brackets. I plan to change them myself. Those links will come handy.

![Question](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/icons/icon5.gif)
Do you know if I order the coil packs I will automatically get the 997 parts? Do the 997 supercedes the 996 part? Just checking before I call.
Any chance you have the part # avail?

Jaime,
When I ordered the coil packs from Sunset Imports I told them I wanted the newer 997 part and that is what they shipped me. IIRC they were about $40 each.

Kevin taught me that on the 993 turbo to replace plugs at least every 10K miles -- they eat plugs! I would assume this may apply to the 996 turbo as well.
The 996tt plugs are rather easy to change anyhow.

Good to see you lurking around...I know you secretly lust after a 996 TT.

My 2002 does need it's plugs changed, but with only 17,000 miles, do I need the coil packs and cam solenoid brackets changed?
Anyone know a good place to buy the Bosch FR6 LDC plugs? Suncoast doesn't show them.
