Default Do turbos wear out?

Hi all,
Of course they must eventually... What are the symptoms of a
'worn-out' turbo that hasn't grenaded itself, but has passed it's
prime... ?

Joe, This is 3rd hand don't know if it's true hearsay but I have been told that you will start to see blue smoke from oil passing by the seals, etc... This is not the sometimes happening blue puff of smoke on start-up but an all the time smoking especially when hitting boost. Grain of salt please.

I had already participated in that thread, but I don't immediately see
where it answers my current question. Did I miss it?
thanks,
Joe

TMK...symtoms range dramatically...unfortunately the only way to know is to take them apart.

Just thought the guy with the 200,000 + mile original turbos might have some bearing.

In a word. Yes.
Typically its the bearings that will fail.
I would recommend rebuilding a turbo at around 60-80k miles or so, replacing all the seals, bearings and checking the condition of the shafts/impellors/housings.

"....might have some bearing"..........."Typically its the bearings that will fail."

Sort of a play on words here? Actually, for most of us, it's a bushing not a bearing. Depends upon what the market will bear.

With the KKK turbochargers we rarely have bearing damage before we have turbine side seal damage and failure. All Porsche turbochargers on 911 (until the 997TT) have relied on oil cooling. The high temperatures will cook the oil>> coking. This material acts like diamond cutting stones. It will wear the turbine side seal bore and sealing ring-grove. All of this wear will happen usually before the bearings will show wear.

However, for myself, I see alot of "user" induced damage>> FOD damage. Debris from the Bypass Valve install, Aftermarket headers FOD damage to the turbine wheels. Small rock dropped in the air cleaner box...
