Default Disappointed with the first test drive. Can't believe it!!

Hi All,
I did my first test drive on a 996 turbo manual today. I must said I am disappointed with the performance. I rev all the way to 6000-7000 RPM each gear and absolutely felt no rush of power at all. I like the BMW135 and 335 manual that I test drove earlier. Somehow I feel the BMW rev a lot smoother and pull harder than the turbo. Which doesn't make any sense to me. I come from a 06 Z4 M and turbo is my dream car. This turbo just be a bad one right?

I went from a 2002 Mroadster to my 2001 Turbo. Mine was highly modified when I bought it, so we won't compare it... However, a couple of things you should be aware of... yes you may have gotten a "bad one" to test drive, but the car only makes between 425-450HP in stock form. The "beauty" of the 996TT is the ease of tuning and making much more significant power...

Also, In stock trim, the 996TT may feel a little slower, due to the weight and the AWD steering making you "feel" more of the weight artificially.

A stock turbo will only boost to .7-.8 bar, so you won't feel as much of that "rush" some of us post about. Try to drive one that's been flashed and had some exhaust work done to it... Might give you a different impression... Drive one with turbo upgrades and you'll lose your mind.

Mike

Mine is stock and pulls like crazy! This is a super fast car, even stock! Test drive another one before you pass the 996 TT off.

There are many modded turbos for sale. Flash makes a big difference. Turbo mods, like mike says, make an even bigger difference. My advice is buy a car that already has the mods you want, and save your money for track days, where you can really do with the car what it was meant to do.

That doesn't make sense. I came from a stock 2002 m3 to a stock 996tt. I couldn't believe the difference in power when i first drove the turbo. There must be something wrong with 996tt that you drove.

humm... are you sure you drove a 996TT and not a C4S??? Even in stock form these cars push you into your seat like a train...

BMW 335?? You can ask the owner of one that I pass on my way back from Sebring... slightly modified 335 against my stock 996TT... I am still waiting for him to catch up after that last shift... lol

I wonder if they put 87 octane in it? Was it at a Porsche dealer? I usually run 93, but got 92 once and I could notice a difference...

You better test drive another tt because your evaluation is way off. My car is stock and hauls. I recently got nailed by radar, have since bought a detector, the CHP was in a parking ares hidden by bushes. He was so concerned that I might out run him, no that was not my plan, that he damn hit me when he pulled on to the highway.

I have a 335i. I have owned a Z4 M (and a 993 TT and 2 GT3's). THere is no comparison between a 996 TT and these cars.
You must have had a bad turbo in limp mode or slipping clutch. THe 993 TT will be much more noticable than the 335i or M. The 996 TT is even more explosive. I would not retest that particular turbo unless its a private owner and RL guy and he explains whats wrong with it and explains whats wrong with it.

Not to knock the 996tt as I am considering purchasing one...but I wasn't impressed coming from a 964 turbo. I am sure it is faster numbers wise but didn't feel that fast to me. Probably related to the non-linear feel of the old school boost and the GT-civility of the 996. I found an e46 M3 to be more exciting to drive than the 996tt.

Now with the mods mentioned above...I am certain it would be a whole other ballgame.

Edit: Landjet...I am digging your car. Looks alot like Tahoe Blue from the pic. If I could find a 996 in either color, I'd hit it.

I test drove another 996 today. Still not up to bar of what I expected. I also test drove a 2005 997 S and I found that I like the 997S much better. It feels more raw to me. For some reason, the turbo just feels tame, like a GT car for me. It's not like I drive it slowly or anything, but I just dont feel the pull, "rush" of the turbo. I will give the turbo another chance since I'm still in love with the look, espencially the behind. But 997S is damn nice.
