Update: Oil cap stays bone dry after a month, no high pressure car washes, otherwise no other changes...I will monitor and post any changes.

My garage queen only has 5555 miles on it and the only time it's wet is bath time....plus it sat for almost 2 years once without being driven.

You should ask T2

It is basically an emulsion of oil and water ( like you would see after shaking a bottle of oil and water (or vinegar). Actually water and oil do mix.. just not very well. It is probably the detergents in the oil that keep the two emulsified.
Driving for longer periods will drive off the vapor but oil vapor and water vapor will reach the filler tube cap and condense there. Very likely that area does not get as hot ( the reason they can make it out of plastic) and so, if one does not drive for extended periods or the ambient temperature is lower, it will be more challenging to drive off the water vapor at the top of the tube/in the cap.......harmless

Lewis: 5555 miles? What are you waiting for? Barrett-Jackson? You don't want to see the odometer click off of 5555? I guess that's the downside of being a Super Moderator. No time to drive.

Trying to keep the miles down so when I'm gone, my son will inherit a low mileage 996TT?

The car has been at the detailer's (ranked #9 in the USA in Autoweek a while back IIRC) since December. Hoping to pick it up this week and bring it home (probably in the trailer since the roads are still sand/salt)

I just like the car and have had a lot of things keep me from driving it past few years.

Not sure what kind of oil is in it - dealer changed it before I bought it. I will be doing an oil change this spring. Torn between Mobil 1 and AMSOIL...

Thanks dtmarsh. Are you stalking me on rennlist now?

I am going to do an oil change soon. I have much reading to do and have already done a ton. From what I have read, everyone seems to come back to the original fill...

You're welcome. Yea, it's a real learning curve, but such a rewarding one.

Even walmart has the M1 0-40 here. Also, check out the M1 website for a coupon that is good for $10 off the purchase of 5 quarts of M1 beginning on April 5 if i remember correctly.

Sorry to chime in so late. Thinking about this one - could it be that the engine gets plenty warm during your driving then while it cools down the oil fill cap (which may have a slightly compromised gasket/seal) is allowing colder air in and condensing on the cap causing the yellow oily mess on the cap and thus an oil cap replacement will fix this issue?? Just a thought. T2

Thanks T2, that is a good point. I will check the cap to be sure it's seal looks good and no cracks...

I got my oil today! From a local indy Stuttgart Specialists! Mobil 1 0-40!

I am not sure a leak on the cap seal will be visible - it may be just a good measure to replace it with a new one - how many miles on your car rainey??
