I believe that even in the Carrera 2 or 4 (3.4, 3.6) the cylinder heads' design traces its lineage to the heads in the GT1, but I could be wong.

Folks there is a vast difference in the strength of the GT3 or GT3R engine vs the GT2 and or TT.. The rotating assy are different, fully counterweighted vs not.. The main benifit is the larger rod width... The C2 isn't even in this class... The only similar thing is that it has H20 and glycol... I'm saying this from the perspective of strength in the design.. However, as the HP increases in the TT and GT2, the bottom end can be strengthened at anytime with the GT3 components... Make sure that you include the GT3 oil pump...

Why is the GT3 engine built so much stronger than a TT or GT2 engine that's putting out so much more horsepower?

With the turbocharged engines the torque is made very low in the RPM band vs a normally aspirated GT3.. To get it, you have to wind the engine up to get the power. Also, the turbocharged engine dampens the rods and crank. There is more compression loads to the bottom end with the turbo, but the shear rotational stress is alot less. Economic=Porsche wanted to use up there 993 inventory (sad)

Sorry....not understanding the '993 sad' comment.
I understand the GT3 is a diff animal (and the base for the R & RS cars).

I think the implication is that Porsche had a sunk cost in development and inventory in the tt engine available on the 993. Rather than start with a clean sheet of paper or an existent more expensive design, Porsche chose to use much of the same technology and parts as in the 993. I personally have no problem with that since the engine is adequately over-engineered to accomodate large power increases without losing reliability. My 02 X50 is one such example. I can't use any more power than it has. Plus, it's docile in rush hour but still sharp when you want the power. I haven't missed 7000-8000 rpm utility. AS

Sad because they developed a crankshaft and rod package that should have went into the 996TT.

Chad;

You know that I admire the amount of monies that you spent on your car! The GT1 pump is the best pump that money can buy. However, for myself I have to set my standards to the next best pump and that is the GT3 pump.. 2 pickups vs the three that the GT1 has... The bright side is, the GT3 pump is a few pounds lighter! So with that said, if you have a ton of cash buy the GT1 pump...
