I am looking for some comparisions.
I am looking for a racecar/supercar. Not a luxury car. I am worried the Porsche is too soft.
For those that have driven both what are the differences?
If the Viper had upgraded brakes?

I've owned 3 911's. Just picked up #3 last Friday, a 03 X-50 TT. Had a 99 RT10 for 3 years, supercharged with NOS, 735 RWHP. The cars are completely different in everyway. If you want brute force, the Viper is tough to beat. The build quality, and engineering is somewhere below the level of Porsche. Drive both, and pick your favorite.

I owned and tracked a 99 Viper GTS and have a 01 TT. I'll give you a long answer.
I have owned 13 Porsches over the years and got bored with them. A buddy of mine has two vipers (GTS and RT10) and we took them out one night and I was blown away.
When I first drove my GTS home, I thought I made a mistake. The seating position is tilted toward the center of the car, the car is very loud, hot, and it's big, really big! Fit and finish on the outside of the car is good, inside is like a Neon. Drive train feels like you can't brake it. The fun part is that when you put your foot down all the minor crap goes out the window. The car is just fun, fun, fun. It's much more raw than the TT, some people say it's crude, some people say that's how sports cars should be.
On the track the car is very fast, great cornering, fastest car on the back straight at Road Atlanta. Weakness is brakes (I distroyed rotors and pads) and you need to improve the shifter. One Viper on the back straight at RA shifted from 4th to 3rd (it's easy to miss 5th), locked up the rear and hit the wall in three places.
I loved mine, had the dealer not wrecked it, I would still have it.

Your characterization of the Porsche, that it is too soft, was dead-on for me when I drove a 996 at the intro in '99. I walked around for days with a big, stupid grin on my face after driving a new Viper GTS, and that's what I wound up replacing my Boxster with. Except for the interior noise, I found the car comfortable, easy to drive, and what an animal, but after owning the car for a few years it was turning into a garage queen because it's fairly useless for street driving...Bam! Woosh! OK, now what?
Gotta back off (again). Now that I live in the desert, I've replaced my black GTS with an '02 C2 coupe - much better balance of sport and car-like usefulness, and it gets driven every day.
The Viper's the downhill skier, exhilarating, a little out of control, huge adrenalin rush. The Porsche's the slalom or mogul skiier, much more agile and precise, and for me, more fun overall.

I haven't owened a Viper, but I've had a bunch of Porsche's (Currently an 02 X50 and a Boxter) and a bunch of super racecars (including a street licensed 1969 Lola T165 Can Am car, a street licensed 1953 Ward Kurtis 500S-La Carrera winner, and a street licensed rebodied Winston Cup Car) There is no comparing a true race car and any factory built supercar. If you want both, you need one of both. The race cars are thrilling unbeatable, but nearly unusable even where I live in semi-rural Indiana. The Porsche is much more refined, infinitely usable in all condititons and has more powere than you can use 99% of the time. For the other 1% or for tracking, my advice is buy a dedicated track supercar, trailer and tow vehicle. It will cost less than an X50. AS

I wholesaled my GTS after doing a couple 180's after emergency braking at 'extra' legal speeds.
It's no fun looking at your tire smoke out the windshield.
Another annoyance was the turning circle. You need a football field to turn around.

I have never driven a Viper. However, my 996TTx50 is MUCH faster than a GTS Viper off the line. I lined up against a GTS twice and both times I ended up multiple cars ahead. Moreover, I witnessed a Viper go sideways during braking after a short sprint -- the brakes are horrible.

Keep in mind that the new Viper has been made more refined and powerful. The brakes have been upgraded and the car according to reports is much more street driveable. It is not a nimble Porsche but will blow it away in most performance test.
If you want both nimbleness and performance you might want to consider the Z06. For the money it cannot be beat.

I had an 01 GTS. the car looked great bags of power but, build quality ,service and drivability/comfort were problems.I kept the car for only 9 months before getting an 02 x50 what a difference!! more power more grip ,more room ,more quality and more money. so for about 2/3 the price the viper will give less than 2/3 in most categories but man its cool no matter how ya slice it. If you get one be prepared to drive it *** out they like to slide. its a big on off switch.

That's because up until 2000 the Vipers didn't have anti-lock brakes......speaks volumes about Chrysler. I'm assuming the car you saw was the red GTS racing Mike that ended up hittin the sidewalk on the opposite side of Louise?
