msindi,
I'll check my tool box tonight. If I still have the alignment gauge, I'll throw it in the box with the tips. Either way, I'll let you know Monday if I still have it.

Shift lever assy, 986.424.010.02 sells for $230.79, and that includes another orig shift lever. Why don't you just have the B&M adjusted?

I cant seem to get the B&M adjusted correctly!!! I am not sure how much of the cable needs to go inside the spring thing since I did not index them befoe hand. My dealer said they would not adjust because it is after market. I m prety sure the popping out of 2nd has to do with link cable adjustment and is not a transmission problem...

msindi,
I have the B&M shifter and what you describe has never happened with my installation. I know someone near you that can properly adjust it or diagnose the problem. email me if you want the contact information.

You can buy a "no slack" bearing set from EVO and use them with your stock shifter. I think they are about $100 or so. Or you can simply re-use the B&M bearings with your stock shifter.

I have put in about a dozen B&Ms for our local Boxster owners. It is done the same way on a 996TT, and the funny thing is your shift tower has a Boxster part number. 2 of the installs were video taped and I have an unedited copy on a dvr-r. We spent just more than a few minutes about marking the cables and showing the factory tool I use to make sure the cables are adjusted properly b/f they are removed.
I do not have time to read all the messages, but I assume it did not jump out of gear b/f the install. Then that might be your answer. Your dealer cannot adjust your cables for the reason I have posted - the special centering tool will not fit on the B&M shift lever. Jeff

Msindi,
The popping out of 2nd problem is a known problem by Porsche worldwide. When I was dealing with the issue, my dealer here also wanted to check cables, etc, etc...I actually printed out many reports here from the Rennlist from others having the same problem. In Brazil there have been around 40 996TT sold, mine, as far as I know was the only one with the problem.
While my issue was being handled, I actually went to the 72nd Car Show in Geneva, and spoke with the Porsche people there. They said that out of 600 996TT sold in Switzerland, only one had the problem, and sometimes the shift cables where "mismatched".
Use all the "ammo" you can get and fight until the end. Even if you have to go to Stuttgart and talk with the CEO himself (that's what I had in mind, Stuttgart was my next stop after Geneva). :-) I even had attorneys involved, etc. But the dealer knew it was a "fight" he could not "win". So I got my tranny exchanged, but since I've heard that some have had the problem reappear, I'm probably selling the car, before the warrant expires. Was expecting more from a Porsche.
But it seems very strange that now that Porsche stock is high, with profits and stuff, they are making cars with so "many" problems...
Best,
TurboRod

I am going to get the cables properly adjusted tomorrow. If the problem persists (I hope not) then I will put a stock shifter in and take the car to another dealer and get a new tranny under warranty!!
Ill keep you all posted.
The dealer I went to last said they would not warranty anything tranny realted since an aftermarket part (B&M) was installed...
