What a shame! I am still learning this lesson, never buy the first year/iteration/version/etc of a car, but the last (ex: 1995 E34 M5 less prone to problems than a 1998 E39 M5).

All the luck to those gambling with the new Cayenne!

Porsche won't see my money (hard earned as everybody elses here for sure...) that soon.

Bummer,

Turbo Rod - I could not find the srticle on alldata.com (not too familiar with it!!). Pardon my stupidity.....If you have a hardcopy can you either scan and email or shoot me a fax?? (617-945-0777). You would be doing me a huge favor and I would really appreciate it!!

The problem is easily fixed with minimal hassle and it's not like Porsche/PCNA is denying claims.

The early 996TTs are hardly typical "first model year" cars as far as problems go, in mmy experience.

Sorry, but I lost my ALLDATA login so I can't get you an exact copy of the TSB. But in my records I found that the title is:

"M/T Damage Documentation" and it was issued 7/21/00.

That's what really pissed me off. Here I am during 2002 explaining the problem to the dealer, etc, etc...When he should've know about the whole issue beforehand. Would have saved me several faxes, prints of reports from other RENNLIST users, going back and forth, etc.

My recommendation would be sign up for ALLDATA DIY and you'll see the 996TT has a pretty big list of TSB, recalls, etc. compared to other "exotic" cars. If you check the data for the 2002 model you'll see the list gets smaller and so on. Hence my recomendation to buy the last of the 996TT instead of the first of the 997TT. Not that I will be doing that...

Best,
TurboRod

msindi, to follow up on the diagnosis from my dealer for my popping out of second gear problem, the write up says:

"shifter gate required adjustment, 34121999 Adjust Shift Selector Cable."

Hope this is useful.

You're wellcome!

I've been there, so I know where you're coming from and how it feels. It's the least I could've done.

BTW, I live in Brazil. So you owe me a beer (Premium). Ha ha!

I had a similar problem with a C2 after installing the B&M shifter.

The one problem that does occur with installing a B&M shifter is to make sure that the shifter is at dead top centre. The Porsche mechanics have a special tool to make sure it is at top dead centre.
Since I had it fixed at the dealer I have had no problems. Mine used to bounce out of reverse and I also had problems shifting into 2nd.

Anybody that installs a B&M as a DIY needs to mark the cables where they sit in the spring-loaded connectors. This is really important because some of the gears, especially reverse will not fully engage. I've installed three B&M's. The last two installs worked well, but the first one went south because I marked the cables wrong. The shifter gauge that you can buy from the dealer does not work on the 996 shifter.

I have the locking bridge tool used to center the shift lever when the cables are adjusted or replaced - it works on Boxster and 996.

But it will not work on the B&M as the lever is too fat and the lever sits up to high for it to fit. I use it prior to the installation of a B&M just to make sure the oem shift is in fact centered before I mark and then remove the shift cables.

I was also able to put the oem shift back in with the B&M bushings - but they are a tight fit. You might want to do this just for the purpose of using the special tool - then mark the cables - then put the B&M lever back in once the cables have been marked. Jeff

I went to my dealer today and they said they wouldnt do anything under warranty today because of the B&M!!
I am starting to hink that this was my frst DIY and last!! I did not mark the shift cables and am not sure if they are at the right lengths!! If anyone can give me a scaled measure or picture I can refer to that would be great!!
thanx
P.S. I adjusted the one on the passenger side (black) and made the spring go in more but 2nd still pops out!! Did not wat to touch the blue one yet.

Where can I buy that red tool??
How did you remove the stock shifter without cutting it or breaking the bushings?? I did both (cutting and breaking) on mine!! Do you know where and for how much I can buy a stock shifter to fix my cable problems??

Buy the tool from your P-car dealer. About $6.00
