996tt chipped versus 997tt
HAs anyone done a back to back comparison. Can't get into a 997tt. Currently have a stage 2 996tt (GIAC and FVD exhaust) that I am delighted with (no x50 however), and I am not sure whether on a acceleration - performance basis I will be that impressed with the 997tt.
I know there are a ton of other improvements on the 997, but unless there is a notable performance improvement it won't really be worth it for me given the additional cost.

There were some back to back 1/4 mile runs done recently and a stage 2 996TT was dead even with the stock 997TT every time.

I dont think anyone with a modded 996TT would be "overwelmed" with the performance of a new TT.
although love to have one!!!!

I am not sure that quartermile means much about performance and acceleration. It does, but only if you exclude the launch time. Trap speed is a somewhat better comparison.
However, to know which car would be a better performer in real life (street or track) then you have to look at engine elasticity, in-gear acceleration and long 30-150mph tests or so, and of course the rest of the acceleration data excluding launch.
I believe the GIAC stage 2 is close to an X50 996TT, then this is how they would compare..Same magazine.
997TT
0 80 km/h 2.8 s
0 100 km/h 3.7 s
0 140 km/h 6.5 s
0 160 km/h 8.0 s
0 180 km/h 10.1 s
0 200 km/h 12.3 s
996TT X50
0 80 km/h 3.0 s
0 100 km/h 3.9 s
0 140 km/h 6.8 s
0 160 km/h 8.4 s
0 180 km/h 10.9 s
0 200 km/h 12.9 s
The 100-200kph (62-124mph) is 0.4 seconds faster on the 997TT vs. the X50, which is substantial, about 2-3 car lengths.

Jean,
This is Rays account of side by side highway pulls:
Finally the 997TT finish the run in period and have time to run my brother's 997TT and my stage 2 996TT. The first time I drove the 997TT and feel the power very similar to my 996TT. We have done 3 runs at highway "somewhere in Mexico " We both start from same gear, 2nd or 3rd gear. The result is exactly the same. I mean every time I need to shift my 996TT, I saw my brother need to shift his at the exactly same time. even the spool up time is exactly same the same. We run head to head from 80km/h to 230km/h all 3 times. The only thing my bro told me he only get 1-1.1bar over boost instead of 1.2 after fill up with 91. Next time when he fill up with 94, we will run them again. Hopefully we have someone hold the camera next time!
And here is the link to the thread:

It seems like the 997TT is dead even with a stage 2 under normal driving.

Thanks, I read that post earlier, it seems that the stage 2 performance is different between the different cars. I compared to another stage 2 on the forum and the X50 seems to beat it. This X50 posted above did the quarter in 11.8s, so about 118 mph..This seems to be similar to some stage 2 cars..
OTOH, I thought the 997TT is supposed to overboost to 1.5 Bar, but according to the poster above, his brother's 997 only read 1.1 Bar max, am I mistaken?
In any case it seems like they are quite close, certainly the straight line performance alone does not justify the incremental expense for the original poster.

Hi Jean,
Overboost is to 1.2 bar Stock is 1bar...... The whole system is kinda unrepeatable and hokey I think. Needs newer software updates:P

John Thanks to copy my post here. My stage 2 is dead even with my brother's 997TT. We try 3 times, start from 2nd and 3rd gear and all the way to 240km/h. Even turbo spool up time were exactly the same. That night before the run with 997TT, I've bring my stage 2 to 1/4mile and run 12.4 trap 114mph. It was very wet with 100% humidity that night.

The 996TT X50 does the quartermile in 11.8 seconds and 120mph. In 12.3 seconds, the 997TT does a 124mph, that is 10 mph faster
