colm, i know this may be a foreign concept to you, but this would not be the first porsche that exited the road backwards, injuring both driver and innocent bystanders. the public roads are also not the appropriate place to take your porsche to its limits. i am a critical care physician and i spend a good part of my day taking care of people who exceed their limits. i have personally treated various people who have lost control of their high performance cars and have injured themselves and innocent bystanders. does that answer your highly intelligent uterance of duh?

A close reading of the post would have explained the fact that EMorgan was having fun on his driveway. That ought to suggest to you that he chose to act in a responsible manner and did not try such behaviour on a public road.

I agree with your sentiment completely, but I didn't think it needed expressing. It could be interpreted as arrogant, implying that others wouldn't think of such a thing, or act in a responsible manner.

I admire and respect your abilities, and vocation, but I think you missed the context.

However we're on the same page. A DE event or track (or private driveway) is the place to explore the limits with a modicum of caution.

Peace!

oh here we go with the high horse moral police again... especially as you speak from the ivory tower of PSM to save your ***. it takes ***** to drive a RWD car without electronic safety blanket.

I respect EMorgan for even having the guts to share this story with us. I am sure plenty of us have made driver errors, but out of pride, we don't share them with others.

He was in first gear for god sakes, give the guy a break. Like other people haven't tried stupid **** on roads when there is no one else around.

As far as getting injured and all that, if you are that worried about it, get a rollcage and a six point harness. That will protect you quite a bit if you slam the tail into the road. Better yet, go buy a Volvo SUV and go 30 mph.

The way you learn a car's limit is by trial and error. Simple as that. Even the greatest driver in the world, Michael Schumacher, has made mistakes and totalled his Ferrari F1 cars. So I don't think it's fair to berate EMorgan and his alleged lack of skills.

Doc, if you want to drive so conservatively, what's the point of owning a Porsche, nonetheless a GT2? Isn't that car meant to be driven hard?

Of course, you're going to say, well you should only drive hard on the track. Then still, why buy a GT2? A GT3 Cup car with slicks is what everyone should be buying then, right?

Why do you drive a Turbo? As a status symbol? Under your assumptions, a Mercedes SL 55 or CL 55 should be the ideal car then. That way, you can drive "CONSERVATIVELY" fast.

No offense but you all are a bunch of IDIOTS. He was tryng to relay a "funny" experience he had in his car. My parents driveway is about a half a mile with acres on each side of the driveway. I do my absolute best to push the car to its limits and hopefully over to experience what we would NEVER feel comfterable doing on the real road. He did not say "I just found the top speed of my GT-2 on 1-95 South in rush hour traffic. He said he was f-ing around in his DRIVEWAY with no people around. GIVE IT A REST ALREADY!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE

That point was allready made, you should have followed your own advice and let it rest. And, look in the mirror when you describe people, no offense of course.

On a somewhat related note -- I had a control issue with my GT2 not too long ago. I was on a public road, totally empty, a 4-lane non-divided mountain pass. I was not going very fast, especially compared to how fast people do go on this road.

Anyway, I came to an off-camber downhill left turn and things got weird. As near as I can tell, I hit a patch of road where there was a cut in the asphalt AND a bump right next to it.

The GT2 didn't like something about this road, and it darn near took me on a wild ride. I was a little frustrated because I've done this road in a lot of cars and this was the first time I'd had this happen. The car was in transition from accelration to braking, but was going in a dead staight line when this happened... I came very close to hitting the brakes -- I shudder to think what might have happened if I did. The incident just reinforced my belief the GT2 is a scalpel that one needs to pay attention to at all times.

Still the most fun I've ever had on wheels though.

What are you guys talking about?
You've al lbeen "pacified" with 4 wheel drive systems.

Let's face it, there are no high performance cars left out there that DONT have either 4 wheel drive or some type of driver assist program.

What are we, a bunch of "ladies"?

It's a 2 wheel drive car, what the F do you expect to do.
456hp + 2wd + Laws of Physics.

I am a little confused as to the negative tune on drifting. IMHO controlled drifting is what it's all about!

Check Out these masterful drifting vids!

hamann, it is interesting that you tell me to drive a volvo or a m-b, because i don't drive hard, like a real man like you. you ask why i drive a turbo. why? i can afford it and i like it. that is why people purchase things. if any of us functioned by common sense alone, we would all drive honda civics and not waste money, as the primary point is getting from point a to point b. but i, like many others, am not as smart as i should be, so a waste my money on a porsche, because i like it and can afford it. i did not buy it to prove that i am a man. it seems that you think that driving a car fast without safety features proves that you are a man. by the way, i notice that you do not drive a porsche. isn't the 740 a little inconsistent with your philosophy?

I bought the 740 because at the time it's what I needed for business. At the time I bought my car, the Turbo was not out yet. You can ask anyone who knows me in Southern California (several members of this board know how I drive-- you can ask Deanger, wilber, Craig in LA, etc.), I drive the **** out of it and I need new tires every 5000-7000 miles.

So my 740 sucks as a sporting car... at least I'm not a ***** to drive it hard.

Let me get this straight. You drive a Porsche because you like it, but you don't drive it fast. Oh wait, you only drive it fast when there are safety features to save your ***. Have you even driven with PSM off? I've driven mine with DSC off. So you basically have admitted that you are like most people in LA-- a poser with a Porsche.

Why do you think I am ordering a GT3? No PSM and RWD, and more performance than a Turbo, just a touch under the GT2. Sure I will make mistakes, but isn't it all part of the experience?

Attack me all you want. At least I don't look down on fellow enthusiasts from the ivory tower of PSM and say that they don't have the skills to handle a GT2.

You're just a square who doesn't have the ***** to drive fast. A typical self-righteous liberal.

It doesn't matter what kind of car a guy drives, it's how he enjoys it. For the pure love of motorsport. But you wouldn't understand... You're the type of guy who flexes his MD degree around and lobbies for lower speed limits, and to top it all off, it's important for you to point out that you can afford a Porsche by overbilling HMOs. Wow. Whoopee.

So how many coats of wax did you put on your Turbo today? Does your car even have one rock chip? While you're at it, you should modify your car to 600hp just so you can tell people about it for bragging rights. Oh, and don't forget the requisite Gemballa body kit and your 20" wheels. The car has to look extreme to compensate for the driver you know.

I have more respect for someone who can throw around their Miata or even a Toyota Corolla then some *** in a Porsche who's scared of driving it hard. What makes you better than all those plastic titted bitches in LA putzing around town at 30 mph in their tiptronic 996 cabs?

Oh, since they don't possess the MD degree, they marry guys like you! At least they can get a free lift or repair of their ruptured implant. You must feel so good in your little world, while you sit around your pilates class eating granola and soybeans while you talk about all these "idiots" that buy sports cars and drive over the speed limit without electronic stability management; meanwhile the valet at your pilates studio is enjoying your Turbo more than you are.

Maybe this kind of life works for you. But no thanks, I'd rather rip up a canyon road even in my POS BMW.
