Exhaust testing has started. Who had the Ruf muffler?

thanks for the wonderful explanation..I think it is a great idea,
The Ruf company conducts it own dyno testing. they also measure results based on the total homogenization of their power upgrades.
I look forward to the results.

Since Weissach does not wish to donate a system for testing and it is "us" collectively that wish to know the results, we could bear the cost of inclusion of the Ruf exhaust. Why not use our "collective" power to purchase a Ruf exhaust for the test and let Stephen keep it as a big thank you for his extraordinary efforts? Before you debate this idea, think about it. A Ruf exhaust costs approximately $5,000.00 (Even if it doesn't, maybe Asgar will find it within himself to authorize a discount to this amount for this admirable purpose). Now, if we can get 100 of us to throw a fifty in an envelope and send it to Stephen to purchase the Ruf then we would have it made!!
Wishful thinking? Idealistic? Maybe. Maybe not.

I'm in...$50 is a small fee for what I think will be a great resource for us all.
I think the results will finally bring *some* end to the debate about 996TT exhaust systems...at least for me. I'm going to stop waiting after this and actually buy the one that wins.

I'd certainly contribute that money for such valuable info. I just bought a GT-2 and am more interested in performance gains, particularly decreasing spool-up times on the turbos thru the use of an aftermarket exhaust and "racing" cats, than i am in achieving big sound; in fact, i hate the resonance associated with most of the tubi set-ups on f-cars and probably won't make the change if i have to put up with a boy-racer sound.
PHD, to what extent will your testing address things like resonance and variables in the cats installed (i don't even know if each of these muffler packages comes complete with its own set of new cats)?

What about "sound" Stephen? I'm sure you're focusing on the hard data, but is there anyway to include, even if it's just a subjective phrase like a wine description, observer opinions on the character of the sound each system produces under two or three different rpm loads?
I think it'd also be nice to see a column that inlcudes a build quality rating of each muffler - i.e. uniformity of welds, smoothness of bends, finish, etc.
Thanks very much Steven for undertaking this endeavor and my respect goes out to all manufacturers who have the ***** to stand behind their products and support the test.
I suspect that this isn't going to be a "you win, you loose" test, and we'll find that various mufflers will bring different strengths to the table. It'll be up to each owner to decided which stats, at a given price point, are most important to them.

I just am reading this since my last post. WOW, you guys are really something else. Let no one ever say this list doesn't have heart.
As far as an evaluation of welds and workmanship I certainly had planned on doing so in the over all description of each muffler.
I also do plan on describing the sound as best as I can in regard to resonance and type of sound. Not sure how good I am with the describing of sounds via writing. It is also so subjective to each person. I try to judge resonance by one simple task. Can I have a conversion with my son in the back seat. After all this is far more important than the loudness of my muffler.

Weissach has not been approached on this issue, Stephen, did you email Ruf directly in Germany...?
I think if you ask the Question formally with an explanation of your intentions, I will be very pleased to speak with Alois see if we can send you a test unit.
Warm Regards

Well, i've got a proposition. I'll buy the Ruf system used for the test if it is the best. Otherwise Ruf has to take it back. I'll put my money where it is if Ruf will... (I'm serious).

you guys are the best!
lets go...call me and we can go over the details, please clarify "the best" if it is returned, it must be in the same condition.
we will look after shipping as a gesture and goodwill to our friends and clients on the board.
thanks to Stephen and his group for making the effort.
best regards

Asgar,
My email was sent to Andrew.. Thanks for the support of the list and our testing. It is appreciated.
Now back to the dyno for the third time today. It is only 96 here today with 40% humidity. It has been like this all week. Heat index of 105 in the shade. I should have chosen a different week to do this. Besides, who idea was this anyway

It would be interesting to measure the back pressure before and after the cats to see if any power increase comes from less restrictive cats vs. less restrictive mufflers. Since the turbos dampen out most resonant tuning the lowest back pressure system should produce the most power. It would be good to know if the catalysts or muffler are causing the most restriction.
