Rattling noise 1000-2000 RPMs

Opps my bad - the noise should be from the RHS of the engine bay if it is the hydraulic reservoir issue - I cannot say I notice it at cold or warmed up conditions more of when the engine idles down at 1-2k RPM's and it always goes away when the clutch is depressed.

So many people told me that the sound is normal that I just stopped listening for it. The car is at the dealer now for it's 30k service. My CPO is up in November and I'm sure that if something really is wrong, it will surface the day after it expires. Until then, I'm going to crank up my Fabspeed and ignor the rattle.

On previous air cooled 911 engines the belt driven fan generated alot of noise that masked the chain and intermediate shaft noise.. It is VERY common, most 996TT engine make this noise.

Kevin and Doc are right, this is there from the factory.
If the current noise bugs you, I recommend NEVER getting a Light Weight Fly Wheel. Once the tranny fluid heats up you would think that someone left a couple extra 4-5 nuts and bolts in the case. I personally like it because I know it should be there and I'm not looking to drive a Lexus.
As to the sqealing sound when the car was cold, this is the drive belt. It is doing it for one of the following reasons 1) it is worn and will get worse until it is replaced or 2) the belt got wet from water draining off of the deck lid ( this happens a lot when you wash the car and get a good deal of water down the venting on the deck lid). Once the belt dries and the car warms up, it will stop.
As to the dealer not talking to you, to address your very real concerns, that is BS.

Hi-
I had the EXACT same issue last year - at very low throttle settings, and for the most part in 1st gear only (though I heard it in 2nd occasionally), I would hear the most faint rattling sound - like a ball bearing, somewhere in the rear of my car.
You cannot hear it at idle, and you cannot hear it past 1-2k RPM. However, once you hear it, you can't NOT hear it.
I took it to the Porsche dealer in Ann Arbor, MI who gave me the party line - "ya, they did hear it, but nothing abnomal, everybody gets rattles here and there, etc." Sent me on my way.
However, I then took it to my home dealer in Greenwich, CT...the guys never told me what was wrong with it, but they completely replaced the exhaust, at no cost.
My car had about 30k miles on it at the time, an '02 TT that was CPO'd.
Again, never did find out what the problem was, but like I said - I came away with a new exhaust.
Good luck!
