Rattling noise 1000-2000 RPMs
#31
I have noticed that my sound is not there at startup. After some driving the sound starts again. Is this any indication that it could be loose muffler bearings as suggested?

Gets louder when warm, and real loud when hot (track). It is the a valve in the resevoir unit and I was wondering if there was a less expensive way to repair than replacing the whole unit?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions

FYI, I had a complete engine failure following a similar rattle. A screw on the intermediate shaft got loose and went into the timing chain. No good. Sportec had to rebuild the engine completely. Funny thing is that it can happen to any 996tt, regardless of the mileage. Even funnier thing is that the issue still hasn't been fixed on the 997tt...

Uhm, this is interesting.
I have the same issue, in all gears: from 1000RPM to about 1800 light throttle application causes a *loud* bearing-like noise. The dealer told me it's normal, others told me it's normal... except my 03 doesn't do it, so it's not normal. After being reminded by Pierre about potential consequences, I am wondering about other explanations before having my mechanic - who incidentally maintains that I am just being paranoid - take apart the heads next week. Any insight?

Hi guy,
I just bought a 996tt 2003 with 30k miles on it. Yes, I have the same rattleling noise. Took it to my friends at Vertex Automotive, Miami, Fl, I know they are knowledge people in 911's, and they told me it's normal on these cars. But I will not discard it as a loose baffle or catalitic inside the muffler.
I guy here posted that he change the moffler and the noise stopped.
