Default Info: Engine Types 9670-645 vs. 9670-642?

Anybody know what has changed on the engine types?

I got lucky and got a complete new engine assembly(intake to muffler, less flywheel) p/n 996-100-971-X with s/n M96/7064500702.....which I believe is an engine type 9670-645.

I got it under warranty due to an oil leak traced to a cracked case...., on top, near what used to be the carnkcase breather port on the 993, but where they now hang (overhang) a christmas tree of oil conditioning hardware. The car is an '02 with 40k+ miles on it and was almost out of warranty on time.

The old engine was a type 9670-642.

I'm curious what upgrades occured between the type 642 and the type 645.

Interestingly, it has cases "Made in Spain".

Any help would be greatly appreciated.,....especially reference to published Porsche material.

Thanks, Mike

Not what I hear, the Spain blocks are made with less thickness. A guy on 6sp said to stay away, acted like he had inside knowledge.

I don't know about him but I've been in that factory (in Oviedo, Asturias) and these are made from new moulds since the original (964) were worn out and when they designed the new ones they added a new webbing. I recall reading other post saying the same and with fotos. I'll post the link if I come across it.

I have both cases, and can tell you that the NEW Spanish case is reinforced.. It has thicker webs..

You can see the difference on this thread

Kevin, All:
Thanks for the insight but I'm still trying to understand what Porsche did with the cases (Spain, new p/n, new engine Type dash # too).

The link / thread above doesn't show the cases.

Thanks again,
Mike

Thanks Kevin: I got it. The webbing is clear. But from the outside surfaces it looks like the set up a new casting facility with a different process there too. While Aluminum is aluminum from a stiffness point of view (and thus the webbing which both strengthens and stiffens) I wonder if they changed the alloy.

My case had cracked up and forward at the large breather port where the gallery mounts, and I can't see any changes up there.

Still seaking info on other changes in this last, -642 series engine type. Thanks again Kevin. Mike.
