SPARK PLUGS DIY QUESTION
#18
#19
Sorry to revive an old thread but I am in the process of replacing my spark plugs. I have the bumper off but I am somewhat lost on what to do next. Doc's write up gets a little lite on the pictures after the bumebr cover comes off. Does anyone have additional pics after this point. Also, as embarrassing as it is to say, I think I know what the turbo chargers look like but I am not sure!

Mark;
Here is a link with some recent pictures, scroll down to picture #5. It will show you the heat shield that needs to be removed. Behind it is the coil on plugs..

OK, just finished the spark plug change. while not technically difficult, I would not consider this an easy DIY. But I did save $500 or so ...... so I quess it was worth it. For those who are considering this, I would speak with a few first timers before you proceed!

Mark,
What Spark plugs did you put in?
Any hobby hints or insights on this DIY for a first timer??? Anything you found to be difficult? I'm mostly concerned about getting the bumper off and worst yet back on straight.
I've changed spark plugs on previous p-cars but not yet on my TT. So I know that you have to disassemble the engine to get to the spark plugs (love those Germans!!)
TIA

1) at 30K they really needed to be done (fact)
2) It is VERY different than other pcars (i thought my 996 was a pain until going thru this) (fact)
3) The bumper removal is the easy part.
4) You can do it jacking one side of the car at a time.
5) Do NOT rely on the porsche car jack (mine BROKE)
6) If you can find an reaonable independent shop, i would seriously consider paying some one to do it....

Mark,
Thanks for the reply. I am conflicted on what to do also. Seems like a LOT of work to get 6 spark plugs changed.
Final question as it sounds like you are weary from this DIY.
What spark plugs did you use?

My two cents into the mix is.. One has to "like" wrenching on there car, to do a task like this.. When someone asks me if they can install turbochargers, I turn around and ask if they can adjust valves on a overhead cam engine?? If they pause or sound confused, I will quickly change the topic and steer them into a shop. Saving money vs actually liking to work on there car need to be in the same sentence.
If you like to work with your hands and want to do the maintnance on your car, this is a good start. It is not difficult. It does require tools and patience. Removing your intercoolers and flipping up the heat shields turn the into a easy job. If one started on a Friday evening, getting the car on jack stands and removing the bumper cover. Will allow for a easy day. And for the record, if you have the bumper and IC's removed, replacing your turbochargers are just a few hours away.. (Smile)
