Here is a picture showing the coated rod bearings from Porsche.. The rod and the rod bearings on the right are out of the 996TT. I was shocked to see that they came coated. As I mentioned earlier when I tore the engine apart I noticed the coatings and assumed that they were sent out and done. I'm going to inquire as to what the coating is, whether it is a moly base or other.. This picture will give you an idea of the added width between the two rods bearings.

How serious is your weight removeal program, kevin? Is the car going to maintain its civility inside? Or are we talking GT3 Cup interior?

Aero;

Well I spent my Sunday afternoon, using a Snap On "Crud Thug" removing my undercoating, in my quarter panel (what a crazy job). Pulled out a perfectly good sunroof.. All the sound deadening foam is out.. The stuff weighs a ton.. Carbon fenders, carbon hood, fuel cell, all the air bags are gone except the drivers, A/C is gone.. Right now the only thing that is inside the interior is the wiring harness and the dash.. Everything is out.. I plan on putting carpet back in, similar to the RS America, and the 993RS, GT3 seats, carbon center console. I'm going to put the doors on a diet this week..

I received my new GT3 engine case today. Porsche has went to Spain to cast there new cases. It is the latest reinforced lightweight offering from Porsche for our cars and the racing crowd. For you purists out there I spent a ton of cash to save 57 pounds for my GT3R case vs 53.5 pounds for the new GT3 case.. A savings of 3.5 pounds!!! The things that have changed with the new case is the reinforced webbing. The lower part of the case has wider main webbing 24.97mm vs 21.16mm. I'll post a interior picture shortly.

Here is a picture of the inside of the cases. (new GT3 case on top, 964 based casting on the bottom). You can really tell the added reinforcement to the lower main bearing areas.

Here is a close-up view of the webbing. Please note that even though this engine is water cooled, no water passes through the engine case. It is cooled by oil that passes through the water cooled heat exchanger.

Interesting thread. Kevin is da man. I wonder, however, why you're keeping the driver's air bag? You'll be driving this car with a proper seat and a 5 or 6 point harness, right? I don't think the air bag will do you any good what-so-ever, and may do you harm. Get rid of it.

Steve;

Yes I will have a harness in the car. I don't mind the look of the three spoke steering wheel. Hence, keeping the air bag. This isn't in stone yet.

Wow! I never realised this until now. There really isn't so much difference between these engines and the earlier aircooled engines. It makes sense though. Without all of the water passages, they are able to make these cases very light and strong. Impressive!

Also points out how hard the oil has to work in these cars.

Heya Kevin,

I picked up something rather cool at the GAF last weekend I think you might want these...

PS I'll post a picture soon but I think the weight savings come out to around 180 pounds...

I agree.. the part (top of the roof) is only about 300 but the interior will be killer I am guesing... How much weight did you save taking that out? About 40 pounds?

Alex, I have removed 23lbs of steel brackets that attach to the bodywork on the inside of the car.. From the lower seat belt retractors, to the rear seat uprights that are spot welded to the wheel-wells, and a few other brackets that don't serve my purpose. I'm trying to trim these things down so that when I weld in the cage, the added weight will kind of equal out. I haven't got the final number yet! Here is another weight saver, in each quarter panel, the intercooler ductwork has an inspection plate used to pull the 40 inch duct out, this plate is made out of steel! Replace it with lexan, or a sheet of PVC!!! 10lb savings...
