I've got to admit, this was shocking to me.

This transmission shifted well (IMO), it had no noise - aside from pinion bearing whine under deceleration, and I didn't expect it to need the extensive overhaul that it needs.

Roger said this box was "average". It's a 20 year old car, I get that. But it had 49k miles when I bought it, and it's got 53k miles now... 3000 of which were me tooling it home from CA. Clearly with it being a used purchase, you never know what you're getting, but I only had two signs of it needing anything. The first was the color of the (original??) lube I dropped out, it just didn't look good. No metal, but kinda milky and didn't look great. Trans definitely shifted better after fluid was replaced.

Secondly, was the noise on deceleration.

I knew I wanted to upgrade to an LSD; so I figured a couple bearings, maybe a couple synchros, and an LSD and I'd be out the door.

Nonetheless.... It's getting the cup gears upgrade (with brass synchros there) and steel synchros on 4-6, the LSD, all bearings, the shift shafts replaced, and bungs added for a oiling system for 5th gear, since I like to accelerate hard, and that will integrate a cooler as well.

All in all, it's nice to know it's in good hands and isn't shot, but I'm *really* thankful I caught this one when it was still in good enough shape to rebuild.

It's like our own bodies; hard to know the damage we are doing till we look inside.

Regardless of the mileage, the wear/damage on the entire 1/2 shift assembly is telling: it was driven hard.

CMS will give you peace of mind though; Roger was helpful when I had questions without even purchasing anything.

Curious if you were going to upgrade the needle bearings to steel cage? Any plans to use the CMS shift arrestor (I have my eye on this part even though I didn't have 2nd gear popout issues).

Roger hasn't recommended doing needle bearings to a steel cage.
CMS shift arrestor is being installed. I never had any 2nd gear popout issues.

You must have much better eyes and a lot more experience that I do; I don't see the damage on the 1/2 shift rods, but both you and Roger picked up on it instantly. One of those things that experience buys you, I suppose.

I have seen pictures like that before... my gearbox might have been even worse as I needed all the shift forks too!

Well I got exciting news from Roger today. All of the parts are in!!

Says I should have a transmission in a couple weeks. Guess that means I need to get to work on getting the *REST* of the car back together!!

That's fantastic. Took those guys a total of four days to build mine after the parts arrived.

Shouldn't be all that bad with all those shin new refurbished bolts 'n stuff.

You will like the box.

Yup. so... today I discovered I had an option I didn't know I had...

A JL subwoofer enclosure with two 12" subs. I knew it had some aftermarket stuff, and the stereo - frankly - sucks. I figured the PO at some point removed the "good" stuff. But I knew it still had a sub (you could hear it).

Little did I know it was behind the rear seats (yes, pick on the newbie for not spotting it) - I"m good with that. So...

Sub is out. Not without a major fight - someone had stripped two of the bolts (this whole car has been this way, why am I shocked about this one?) They also destroyed the nut-sert on the inside of the subwoofer. Luckily I should be able to get new, epoxy in place, and if someone used reasonable torque and didn't cross thread things... It should work just fine. Question is, do I want to keep it. On the fence on that.

Dremel and a cut off wheel to the rescue...

This is really what I was after

Parcel tray is out and ECU removed to send to Markski.
Should pick up the welded coolant pipes on Friday, and start re-assembly of most things this weekend. I've got a lot of work to get the engine back together.

I took my car down in September for radiators "only"......not even close to back together. You're making good progress!

Have him install a 996Cup 3rd gear shift fork (its steel v. aluminum) and also the 996Cup shift lever. Not very expensive and both will greatly enhance the gearbox, especially the shift lever as it get rid of the long counterweighted TT shift lever.

Interesting find and it is a rare bit of hardware too. Here’s a link as I recognized it and was amazed at the cost $$$$$$$$$ ! You should be able to clear a decent penny on it and recoup some.

Oh boy. Well. I'm calling it quits on this one. The list is long and extreme enough already. If I put 5000 miles a year on this car, it'll be a lot. Hopefully with everything else Roger is doing, it's sufficient. I've got the numeric shifter and cables going in as well.

Yeah I was stunned when I saw the price. If I can get it set-up nicely, and tuned, (which I haven't worked on at all) I will probably keep it. It's a nice piece of hardware. and literally *never* would have known if I didn't know what I was looking for.
