Yeah, the Guibo looks good. The noise is definitely gear lash/bearing whine. I thought it was the rear one, just made sense, but apparently it's in the front... no big deal.
I'll pull it out and get it addressed.
The giubo often looks fine when it is installed but once it is removed it falls apart in your hands, don't ask me how I know.
The only way to check it is to remove it, and when they go bad they cause a lot of noises that sound like they are coming from other places, like gear lash, again don't ask me how I know.
Before you pull your front driveline, remove the giubo and check it.
Also have you checked your oil level in the front diff? The front axle flange seals are known to go bad and leak but the belly pan hides the evidence. Your front diff may be dry.

Noted... Went through and read Capt Obvious's thread on the E-diff.
I suspect given my tire size is incorrect (and I have no idea how long it's been this way), that I'm probably facing continuing issues if I just get this one rebuilt or install a used one.
To change wheel/tire size is a cost, and I don't mind these wheels/tires (since they're new Michelins)... so probably going to bite the bullet and go ahead with the e-diff. Anyone have a good one laying around??
For the record the car made this noise when I picked it up, but it's definitely getting worse. I attributed it to pinion bearing noise in the transaxle. Didn't anticipate it would be the front. Whatever. I'll get it sorted.
No desire to convert to 2wd, so that's not really an option. In other news, I've put 100 miles on the car, slowly increasing the revs and getting the clutch broken in. Starting to drive normal. I really, really, really, love the numeric shifter and cables. Such a massive improvement over stock.
I'm gone a lot the next few weeks, so won't have much chance to drive it. <sigh>.
Well, you could find a nice set of properly sized wheels/tires and then sell the ones you currently have to offset the cost.
A 997 front diff swap will certainly run you money as well.
The cheapest thing to do, which I know you don't want to do, would be to do the 2wd conversion. At least until you find a 997 front diff or different wheels/tires etc
At the risk of being tagged as lazy (Use the Search Button Luke!), someone recently talked about a spreadsheet of all the "while I'm in there" hoses, gaskets, O rings, misc parts that should be replaced on a once-every-20-years engine-out refresh. Did that spreadsheet ever materialize? I think OP here had a text list somewhere. Links obviously an added plus. Yes, it's still the holidays and a "Lazy!" dart would be deserved.
Here are the items I know it is missing...
Clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, GT2 conversion, clutch alignment tool, clutch fork shaft/bearings, seals cap.
Numeric shifter and cables
Countless replacement bolts to fix PO screwups.
General shop supplies.
So.... put 150 miles on it (been gone a lot the last month). really think this car hates me.
Drivers window regulator crapped out - part in hand, I'll fix that tomorrow.
Frunk won't open (hoping this is some can-bus thing since I took the sunroof panel stuff apart, and it seems to not work anymore).
Worst though... it's leaking Petosin. From somewhere. Cant' figure out where (yet). It's on the engine side, but doesn't appear to be the upper reservoir or lines. I find it hard to believe it's the new seal from the pump to the reservoir; but I'm going to get it on the lift tomorrow and take a good hard look with the scope. It's not a ton, but it is enough to leave a drip on the floor every time I drive it and the fluid is lower now than it was when I filled it.
Really hope I don't have to drop the engine to replace that pump, if that's what it takes.
Everything else seems to be cooperating well. Car drives well.

Leaks are my greatest nightmare after a big project like this. Especially after taking so much time to clean and prepare parts. Hope it's a simple fix for ya! What's the approximate location of the leak?
Sounds like one of the power steering lines leading to the pump is leaking. When I pulled my engine and replaced it a crush fitting on one those lines sprung a leak.
I'd look at any mods you did to the pump or reservoir for the clutch conversion.
The pump can be removed with the engine installed no problem. Since I went to the GT2 clutch I actually remove the PS pump and hang it from the engine lid hinge when I take the engine out.
The ultimate solution is a Tiptronic pump & reservoir which is what the GT2/GT3 use. I have the LUK p/n of the Tiptronic pump if you need it, it's used on other cars so Porsche tax can be avoided.
So theprf was definitely onto something. Got it up on the lift yesterday and did a lot of poking and prodding, general inspection since it's been 150 miles since everything was completed. Everything looks great, with the exception of this leak. I thought it was going to be the o-ring between the two halves of the power steering pump. I was wrong.
It was the modification to the pump, where the high pressure line used to exit and go to the power assisted slave. That was tapped and plugged, and the plug was installed using red permatex locktite. Apparently, red locktite is not capable of withstanding the Pentosin. Below, circled in yellow.
Kinda kicking myself for this. I debated when it was out of the vehicle to just JB Weld the sucker in place. Should have done it then. Oh well. It didn't take long to fix, I vacuumed out all of the pentosin from the reservoir, then used a ton of q-tips to dry up what was left in the threads, then used new q-tips and brake clean and got everything cleaned. Quick wire brush on the plug and cleaned it, mixed up some epoxy, and was able to rethread pretty easily. Engine was still warm, so it cured pretty fast. I've left it overnight and will start it this afternoon.
I figure I'm never going to revert back to the stock setup, and it's easy enough to but a pump if someone wants to. I'll monitor.
Also, some of the pentosin damaged one of the rubber "grommets" that mates the front housing to the coolant elbow that bolts up to the block. These also have o-rings to seal, but I'm considering replacing that as well. The biggest suck there it appears would be the doggone coolant mess.
See how it's slightly swollen? It's still very flexible and pliable and not leaking, and I know there's quite a bit more rubber on that sleeve. Thoughts???
And yes... I'm well aware the bottom of my engine needs to be cleaned. Very hard to do when it was on the lift table. I'll make some time for it soon.
I also got the trunk opened - turned out to be a sticky switch. got the center console put back together, and will replace the drivers side window regulator today, and cross that off the list.
Good news is the list is getting shorter every week. I *really* want to put my foot into this puppy. Behaving, but man is it a challenge.
