500+ BHP is it Safe?
I am seriously considering a 500BHP re-map. Mt question is this. Is the stock engine strong enough to take 500-550BHP reliably.
I have heard that titanium con-rods are recommended at anything above 500BHP.
Also the car is a tiptronic S, would this kind of power increase damage the transmission
Any comments from those that have followed this route to increased performance

A good remap "only" will get you to about 485HP and 730NM of torque, it is the increased torque which makes the car feel dramatically faster. If you intend to really use the performance, ie German Autobahns, track work then most tuners say this is about your limit due to the gearbox limitations. There are however some contributors who claim a lot more power through a tip - the question is, how long the box will take it ?
As far as engine longevity, Porsche uses bigger turbos with their higher than 420hp TTs so one can assume that you will be stressing the stock ones more than Porsche reccomends. I would go for it, enjoy the experience but be ready for higher bills than a stock car and kiss your warranty goodbye.

I would say 500 crank HP is no danger to the engine at all. The new GT-2 are running 470s with the same engine with with a 4 year warranty! There are several guys on this board and others that are running 600-700hp with no internal mods. I dont know of anyone thats had an engine grenade even with the higher HPs. A couple of guys have 20-30K miles with these mods.
If you keep the mods modest the engine will likely be fine. The turbos will work harder and could fail. They are much less expensive than any internal engine problem. If you get the IDE chip-switch you may even keep your warranty intact.

500 hp is no problem. Many people go up to 600 hp, at around 700 hp many of the tuners start doing engine work, some don't. The stock K-16's are good for around 500-550 hp. after that the K24's (X-50 & other aftermarket tuners have them) are good to about 600-625hp), after that the Garretts or modded K24's. Techart only does their stage 1 on tips, which is good for upper 480's (but I saw Paul Tracy's Techart tip 911 TT w/ 540 hp). A few people on the boards have almost 600 hp on their tiptronic cars and no issues.

My car's been fine with 650+ HP so far... Check with Stephen at www.imagineauto.com and Kevin as to how to get there. They came up with a really nifty solution for a tranny cooler (doubled the capacity of the stocker) which I'm sure helped.

I have been running level 2 ECU in my car for about 7,500 miles now with no problem's whatsoever. My car with GIAC stage 2 dynoed at 449RWHP (~507BHP) and I have recently switched to FVD level 2 and the car feels quicker. I will be dynoing as soon as I get a chance, but I am 100% positive its up over 450RWHP.

I just went to AMG ETR's site to see his car. Incredible. I've never liked the speed yellow to be honest but THIS car is beautiful. It's all in the details with this car. Wow. Hmmm.... maybe i'm the only one here who has'nt seen it. That just occured to me!

OK - Following all your helpful advice, this is whats happening:-
New Milltek Exhaust
Re-Map ECU from MTM
Re-Map Tiptronic also MTM
Will give 520-550BHP and 720nm TQ will confirm after Dyno Testing

MTM are predominately Audi tuners - not an obvious choise for Porsche
I will tell you categorically that you will not get 520-550hp with the items you list above. If the exhaust includes sport/race cats and the ECU program is specifically written for the exhaust then 510hp is possible.
Are you using Kim Collins in the UK ?
If yes then on their web site they list 480hp/720Nm from ECU which is about right. If you look at the German MTM web site then to get 530hp they list new turbos as needed -again this is right.
You should talk to Tech 9 in Liverpool who are Techart dealers but also have experience with most German tuners -they have done a few 996TT Tips.

Yes, I am talking to Kim Collins, and MTM are keen to develop UK market for their 996 upgrades.
I am prepared to accept you are right with respect to final bhp output, it was an educated guess, and quite honestly 510bhp is fine, as I set out to achieve 480-500
I have some knowledge of QST with Audi's and haven't heard any negatives. Kim now owns and operates a 993 as well!!

I know Kim from his er...ahem former life when he was blowing up Cossies - so I realise he has plenty of experince.
Personally I would prefer to go with a tuner who is Porsche established in the UK - but MTM are respected for Audi and their programs for the 996tt probably come from one of the established writers.
You should check whether you are getting the sport/race cats + ECU to match theis tune since this is usually worth 20hp over just a muffler and no cats.
510hp and 720 odd NM of torque in a Tip will be big fun
